when on the lake, I never get out of the boat, someone would have drag me back to the landing if I do, LOL

Yes, it'll work...but then you gotta store it someplace while not in use...a swim-platform permanently attached to the transom is more useful IMO...if you feel you need something heavier than a typical swim platform, there are some pretty heavy duty transom-mount ladders as well...
 
I have one just like that and it works fine - got my 200 lb + nephew and others in & out of the boat no problem. I'll admit, I asked the big ones to put their weight toward the outside of the steps. Had to adjust the feet that bear against the side of the boat pretty high, but it works, and it stows in the cuddy easily. I agree that a swim platform would be nice, but unless it has some steps, it wouldn't be as easy getting out of the water.

Remember to pull the ladder in when you get under way or you'll lose it.
