Wireless Card For Laptop

Who has em and what kind?

I just got a Dell laptop and I am thinking about wireless for it so I can stay on the board 24/7.

I know Sprint has service for around $30 a month and it works anywhere a cell phone does.

I am fairly computer illiterate so use small words please.
 
My wifes got a Dell, it's wireless, we went to Atlanta and Jacksonville last year and she was robbing signals everywhere. (she's asleep right now and I ain't about to wake her)
 
If I understand correctly, you can get a wireless card that will work on wifi(?) where you have to be near a site, or the "sprint" or "clear wire" type where you have service everywhere.

As for the price of the Sprint service, I was just going with what the city pays for em.
 
Ok if you have a wireless Router in your home you can use a card in your computer to use your laptop any were in the house, I go out on the deck or out side offten!

If you have a wireless card you can steal wireless from any were you find a signal, Lots of places have free WIFI now bars restutrants and then there are what they call hot spots in citys that you can go to and use.

I used my wireless when I was in the hosiptal! ;D

Now as for cards they are all about the same and all get 54 mb's

Some cards are better then others as far as how you use them, Linkys is good but I found that it was hard to set up and had to call them for support.

On my Dell I run a 3 Com and it was the most simplest thing I have ever done!! was in less then 5 min and has never missed a beat!!

So there you have it in a nut shell!! I would Highly recomend the 3 com!!

Here is one on ebay which is were I got mine, $25 is about the best deal I have found, and that includes shipping.
 
Wireless routers send 100 MBS if you have it wired to a computer and all Wireless connections are 54 MBS

And you don't have to have the same name brand router and card, I have a Linkys router and 3com wireless.

My house is wired I have 4 computers hard wired, and I have the laptop on the wireless.
Its this way cause when I set up the houase it was like 5 years ago before wirless got cheap, But if I ever move I will be all wirless, except my computer cause I like speed!!
 
It seems that we are talking about two different types of wireless here. First is the WIFI which is the wireless network you can set up in your house and is open to every one in range if you don't enable the security features. Your neighbors will be using your internet connection if you don't set it up so they can't. This is the same type of wireless you can use at any Starbucks (or the like) just about anywhere in the country. The only expense involved is the purchase of the wireless router. Most computers you buy today will already have the necessary hardware to connect to a wireless router.

The other option, which I think randleman is contemplating is a wireless broadband service. I know Verizon and Sprint offer the service. Cingular may also. This is wireless internet service via a cellular phone network and should work wherever your cell phone works, assuming its on the same network. I used to have the Verizon service which I used for business purposes. It worked well but I cancelled it because I no longer need it. The major draw back is the cost. I was paying $60.00 per month and you usually have to do some sort of contract just like a cell phone. And it will cost you to cancel early. If you really think you'll use it, it's great. Or it could end up being an expensive toy.

I have a wireless network in the house so I too can sit on the back porch with my lap top, but my wireless broad band card is now a dust collector.
 
my problem is that i have dial up. they dont offer the fast access dsl in my area. there is no cable here either. they don't offer it in my area. my only option would be to go through satellite like direct tv or something but it is pretty darn expensive to set it all up and then it's around 75 bucks per month. my dad uses the direct tv deal and it does'nt seem to be much faster than dial up to me. plus, when it's raining he loses signal. what should i do?
 
Under those circumstances I would go with the cellular wireless. I had speeds similar to DSL when I had mine. I got rid of it only because I no longer needed the portability and I have Verizon FIOS at home.

One of the guys at work had a small Toughbook with a Sprint card in it today, I was very under impressed with it. It was slower than dial up.

I think I may just do the wifi in the house for now and use other peoples wifi's when not at home. I wouldn't use it enough to justify it.

I know very little about computers but I have noticed that when you post on a thread that your "fisherman" at the bottom is so wide that it makes the thread wider than my screen so I have to scroll back and forth to read it.

Is there a way to downsize it on your end or mine to avoid all the scrolling?
 
oh, i don't know. it's normal size just like everyone else's post on my end. is any one else having this problem? if so, what do i need to do about it. i like my ol' fisherman fall'n off the boat! but, if i need to i will just remove it.
 
Back on topic for a moment......

Here's hardware that could be added to your desktop computer that would allow you to plug in the card that your cellular company provides to allow you to connect to the internet.
