Volvo Trim Cylinders

I started tearing the outdrive apart to get remove the trim/hyd cylinders for repair/replacement of the o rings and seals.

Right off the bat one of my removal bolts for the helmet plug broke off and I tried to use a extractor, didn't work had to drill the broken bolt out and then use 2 punches to remove the plug.

What should have been a 5 minute job ending up taking 3 hours.
Removed the top portion of the outdrive (no Problems) removed the shift cable and raised the outdrive up until it was straight out from the transom.

Tomorrow when I get in from work I'm planning to remove the hyd lines to the cylinders and then see if I can disassemble the cyl in place or if I have to remove them from the transom shield. The bolts that hold the cyl to the transom shield are in the lower portion of the transom and it looks like I'll have to remove the exhaust manifolds to get to the bolt pins that hold the hyd cyl to the transom.

I found a guy on e bay that I think has the repair kits with all the o rings and seals.

I'll try to take pics and post them on here as the job progress's unless no one is interested then I'll just "geter done" without a report and pics.
 
Lee, wish I had some advise for you, but I've never done one of those. Good luck with it, keep the heat handy, you'll probably need it
 
Hit a snag:

I got a e mail from the guy on ebay and he said he doesn't have any repair kits to fit my cyl's.

He said he's never tried to find the kits for my stuff.

Now the decision comes to try to get mine apart and see if I can find the seals and o rings or bite the bullett and buy cyl's.

I wonder if the newer style cyl that he has would fit mine?
 
Took some pics of additional disassembly but I'm having trouble with login for photobucket so until they get my login fixed I wont be able to post pics.

I could open a new account but then I would lose all my pics stored on there. It may come to that.

1 of the pics I took shows a plastic allen head fastener (outdrive side) next to the hyd cyl pin that holds the hyd cyl (trim hyd cylinders) to the transom shield.

Does anyone know what it's for?

Also the hyd cly pin is threaded partially and has a bolt in it (is inside the boat) does anyone know how these pins are removed?

The Seloc book doesn't address my type of attachment.

Lee, If you can get the cylinder head, rod and piston assembly out of the cylinder barrel you can take it to Hydraulic Service on Victory Blvd in Portsmouth Va. Im pretty sure they could fix you up with a repair kit. Give them a call at 757-487-2513 or toll free at 1-800-537-9986. I use to carry all kinds of cylinders to them and they have always fixed me up.

If Tony at Shoreflythe is correct the only way to get the connecting pins (that hold the cyl to the transom shield) is to push them outboard with high pressure grease. If you look at the 2 pics that show the yellow dots, they get removed and then the grease fittings are exposed.

He said they could be very hard to get out.

Tony said he had found o rings and seals to fit them but he didn't sound like he would sell them to me or install them in mine ( I think he wants to do the removal and reinstallation)

If I can get them out I was planning to go to a hyd shop and try to find the o rings and seals but I may see if Tony will sell them to me.

Spare was looking to see if he could find a manual on mine. My Seloc repair manual doesn't address my type of connection.
 
You can try ta soak those pins down with PB Blaster or penetrating oil if you can get it on them, it may help. I've never messed with a Volvo Penta drive, I ain't much help. They look like they are a pain ta get off.
 
still trying to find that manual, do you think you could spin the end caps off, pull the end caps and rod out, leaving the cylinder end attached to the boat?
 
Thats what I was thinking Spare. I've repacked alot of hydraulic cylinders on logging equiptment and other things and if you can leave the barrel in place it saves alot of time and work. I just look up into the barrel ta make sure its not scored up by the piston rubbing the sides. Good luck Lee.
 
The end of the rods (towards the outdrive) are square like a H they wont let the end caps slide off.

That pin has to slide out but I'm getting conflicting stories from 2 different "volvo marine repair shops". 1 says he's never seen removal of those pins by a grease fitting and the other says that's how it's done.

Without a good repair manual I think I'm fuked.
 
Lee, I found a parts break down today, it looks like the grease gun thing is the way its supposed to go, I'm getting a Volvo manual from a guy later this week, I'll let you know what it says. BTW, when I was looking atteh parts breakdown, it didn't list a rebuild or seal kit for the cylinders, didn't even have the cylinder broken down.
 
Ok on the grease fittings does it say approx how much grease pressure needs to be applied?

I think (hope) I can get parts to rebuild from a hyd shop. Maybe the guy on e bay can get them for me.
My local Volvo guy said he has rebuild parts but I'm betting he wont sell them to me, he probably will want to install the parts.

He is kinda a pain sometimes so he may not do either because I didn't bring the boat up there and let them do everything.

I still may have to carry it up there and let him press the pins out, but I'll give it a try first.
 
on the amount of pressure to the grease fittings, I'd guess a whole freaking lot, plus heat if needed,. it appears that there are plugs and screwws that close in the outward path of the pins. If you can come up with any part numbers let me know, I have a good line on Volvo parts
 
I have a customer that owns a Texaco Express Lube and he has grease guns where he can turn up the grease pressure so he's going to let me try.

If your manual has a parts breakdown on those pins: I can only see 1 bolt that holds these pins in. Can you scan or take a pic and send it to me?
If not just look at it and tell me if there is another screw or fastener that holds each pin in.

I don't see how I can use heat on the pins, the only way I could get direct heat on them would be on the exposed end (inside the boat) and there's not much room. If I put heat on them they will expand and I will have to let them cool again so that kinda defeats the purpose of heating it doesn't it?

I got the hyd hoses off upper 1 in way of the plastic (yellow covers). Removed the yellow covers that keep water out where the grease fittings are. The grease fittings aren't there I guess volvo repair shops have them, they don't come installed behind the yellow plastic covers.

I looked at the schematics you linked but I don't see them for purchase. I was going to try to get the pins out myself but without the fittings I'm dead.

I talked to the local volvo guy and he wouldn't give me a estimate to push the pins out and rebuild the hyd cyls.
 
should be hard to thread some fittings in the holes, just pisk some up at teh local auto store, I even saw soem at Lowes. My buddy has the manual, just haven't gotten up with him yet. In the scematic, I saw there are plugs(screws) on the outboard side, have you removed them?
