V20 vent

I am having some engine trouble. I was advised to check the vent for the gas tank. Does anyone know how to go about doing this job?
Thanks,
Steve

Easiest way would be to go to your gas tank, locate the vent pipe, loosen it from the tank and blow thru it. If you can blow air thru it that means it's not clogged, and it's ok. If it's blocked that means you should either clear the blockage or replace it. Then check the stub coming out from the tank that the vent hose attaches to. Make sure that's not blocked also.

There's nothing mysterious about a vent pipe. As the name implies, it's just a pipe or hose that allows vapors to vent in and out of your gas tank. If it's blocked then air will not be able to enter the tank and replace the gas being drawn out into your engine, so in that respect it prevents a vaccum from forming in your tank. Additionally, gas fumes will not be able to vent out of your tank on a hot day when the gas in your tank expands due to the heat, so it prevents your tank from becoming pressurized and possibly bursting.
Simply stated, it's a device that allows the inside pressure in your tank to constantly equalize with the outside atmospheric pressure.

If you think it's a vent problem, next time it happens, take the gas cap off, if the problems go away, it's vent related.

Thanks

Going down to the boat tomorrow, I'll give it a try. Hopefully it will work and we can get in a half day of Striper fishing!

I hav had vent issues before, one bugs love to make nests in them and they get blocked, but as stated just blow some air in there to clear. But remove the hose from the tank and blow toward the tank till clear. This way you don't blow the clog into the gas, and not on to the screen at the vent. I also had a vent coronoid so bad that it was blocked, it was on the Sea Ox when I got it, the old owner said the 110 gal gas tank did not work and I would have to use 6 gal above tanks or replace, After draining the tank and replacing all tghe hoses I found the vent all rotted, changed it and have not had any issues since.

Success!

We cleaned out the vent. Seemed to have something crusty in the vent hole that fell out. Changed the gas filter, gassed up and got a few hours of fishing . Two keeper Stripers (40" and a 33") and two throw backs.
Going again Friday.
Thanks for your help!
