No, it is not necessary. In fact, several of our members have done the transom fix without the metal cap. Do a search of the site for pictures.

K KEEPINGITREEL New member Sep 23, 2010 #3 Thanks for the info Destro! Had to use a JI Joe similarity. Seems that the aluminum cap is a thing of the past. Kinda like the natural look of the fiberglass cap. This thing better float!!!! Thanks for the input you guys.
