Trailer Tongue Scale

Does anyone know where to rent or borrow a trailer tongue scale in southeastern NC (I'm in Wilmington, NC)? Buying a used one is an option if the price is right.

I know I can buy a new one online for $140, but I dislike spending much money on a tool that I will only use once or twice.

Thanks!

Cant you just use a bathroom scale. Cut a 4 x 4 the right length stand it up on the scale and lower the hitch on to it....If you max out the scale which there is a good chance you will get two legs, 2 scales and a cross support spanning each leg under the hitch. Add the weight of the two scales together and there you go.

Kind of half assed but like you said you will probably only do it once or twice.

yeah, i am aware of that method. The boat's in a storage yard with an uneven dirt floor, so it might be a little challenging, but it could probably be made to work. I know the Previous Owner did not load the boat right since my car dives way too low when I towed it... I'll have to spend some time adjusting it (this is my first boat, so the scale will at least get a few uses until i get the feel for it)

I'm also trying to finishing up my O/B stand in time to haul the boat home this weekend to remove the motor and get to work. I really don't have the time to go out and buy the 4x4, pipe, measure the tongue, cut everything, etc because doing so would mean another weekend delay. Its just a question of time vs money. Thanks for the reply!

Go by your local land fill or junk yard and drive onto there scale, you will be all set! what are you towing it with??

Thanks for all the suggestions so far. It's getting a little off topic for 'classifieds' so I am going to start a new thread this weekend asking for help if I can't figure it out. Or maybe I'll write it up if I do. FWIW, i found a Sherline trailer tongue scale at http://discountcampus.com/store/discounttrailerscales.htm. Cost a few pennies shy of $130 delivered to my door. Hopefully it will arrive by Friday. So if anyone in the Wilmington area wants to check their tongue weight, i have the appropriate tool...
