Tongue weight?

there is an equation used....I think for highway speeds you want about 5% - 7% of your gross wieght as your tounge weight.....and Mac that jack is plenty for your boat

you show be able to pick the boat up by the tongue but it should be heavy to pick up. I can pick up the tongue of the trailer under the 25 ft Sea Ray i have. That is adjusted by the location of the axles under the boat. you can move the boat forward for more tongue weight or move it back for less and the opposite for the axles move them forward for less and back for more. ou want the trailer to carry the weight not the truck.

skools, I'd say that is probably too little tounge weight, for me any way, don't think I could lift 10-15% of the load.

Wouldn't about 400 lbs. fit in there?

I added a link to my above post, make sense to me, too little weight and won't you have some swaying???

Tin, I like the scale you posted...my rig is 4600lbs on tandem trailer...12%=550lbs and I THINK I'm close to that...recently moved my slider-axle assembly BACK 2'' to add tongue weight...worked well as ''fish-tailing'' stopped immediately... ;)...

Skool, I don't THINK I'll be liftin' mine and the above addition just got it to where it ''tracks'' properly...which goes to show, ''rules of thumb'' are great, but it boils down to individual situations...I know you know what I'm talkin' about... ;) ;D...

Mac, I like ''overkill''...keeps ya from havin' to ''kill'' again later.... ;D...

Hey Phester...yeah, my shortest trip is 1 1/2 hours to closest fishin' hole...5 hours to coast and did 11 hours to Fla. panhandle this past summer...I'm a ''towin' fool!''...

I guess I was off a bit on the 5-7 %....that link that the TinMan put up means I should have ,in round #'s, 300lbs of t.w. As it is now I've probably got around 150....seems ok, never had it on the highway at 55. When I first bought the boat the t.w. was probably around 25lbs. ....WAY to little

RAP you're a towin' madman, don't want to rub it in too much, but, my ramp is 1.2 miles away.....good ramp, the channel itself needs to be dredged, can't come in at dead low

hey to each his own i like my truck so i let the trailer carry the load. My Sea Ray has around 200 to 250 lbs tongue. but the trailer is made to carry 7500 lbs. I like over kill trailers. That way i can use the trailer to haul in other projects.

''can't come in at dead low''

Heck, stay out and FISH a little longer ;D ;D ;D ;D

Yeah, from where I am, towin' is a part of fishin'...

Hey Skools...just usin' what I GOT... ;) ;D...whenever I can get around to next trailer, it'll be overkill...

yeah RAP i have a 7500 LB carrying weight trailer for a 29 ft boat with 2 5/16 ball under my 25 ft Sea Ray Over kill yes but worries none.

Then the V20 has an Aluminum FloatOn 25 ft trailer made to carry 5500 lbs with the little V20 on it lol

Then i have the 21ft Contintental on a 25 ft steel trailer made to carry 7500 lbs had 2 5/16 but welded on a 2" ball receiver.

Then the 19 ft Sea Ox has my only single axle trailer with a 4500 lbs 21 ft boat trailer

So Yes I like Over Kill.

Thanks guys for your replies. The ramp I use is 3 miles away . I'll be going with the over kill. RAP you trailered 11 hours how'd it go. Virginia Beach is a 12 hour trip from my house. I would be going though the mountains. I'm just thinking. Thanks again! Bill Mc ;D

Go fer it , Skools...

Mac, fortunately, the Fla. trip was flawless, but I put new bearings every year, shot 'o grease every trip and run Goodyear Marathon Radials w/max air checked often...even LED lights on trailer...

There have been some good tips on trailering here lately...follow those and make that trip...what ya towin' with?...12 hours will be WORTH all the FUN...hell...a few days w/these guys, you may never go back!! :o...

I have a tandam and I canot even come close to picking up my trailer! I would say it has to be near 400 #.
I have my truck up to 80 mph and not a sway or anything out of it!!
The more weight the better the handling!!

It ias up to you what you want and what you tow with. When I use to have a full size van I had the tounge so light I could lift it with one finger!!
Never had a problem towing cause the van blocked all the wind from getting under the boat.

When I switched to my blazer the ting would want to take flight at 30 mph!! I had to add weight (move boat forward) just to keep it on the road.

It use to be that for every tow truck I had to adjust the weight for that vechile.

Now I just buy full size trucks, beef up the springs and full steam ahead!!

When I had my full size Blazer w/350 4 barr. I was going down the high way lost a tire and never new it till the tire passed me and i looked in the mirror to see sparks flying all ober the place!! I cut right thur the u bolts and all!

Now you no why I have a brand new trailer!! I am hard on them!
