steering cable lenth

I have a 1978 steplift cuddy cabin and want to replace the steering cable, does anyone know what size it is
I think i replaced with a 18 foot cable but it was to long but im not sure
thanks i know someone knows the right lenght im bying it from the computer at wwwboatfix.com its a great web site

Mines 17 Ft You Could Turn The Cable Differently In The Rear Corner And Differently Out Of The Box And It Should Fit Fine At 18 Ft

17' would be perfect.
Mine is 18', with the jackplates added 5" it works out great.
The length will be stamped or stenciled in it about a foot or so from the end (don't remember which end).

Depending on how much crap you got in your way usually dictates the stress level of removal and installation.
In some instances it's easier to remove the helm to replace the cable.
For instance with the helm attached to the cable you can start from the front of the boat and push to the rear.

slide motor?

how do you slide the motor? Im going to cut the cable and remove everything i think the steering rod just slides out of the tube im not sure but what i want to do is clean out the tube,i think theres alot of dirt and grease in there making the steering tight and harrd to turn what do you think

You have to unbolt it and remove screws, then you can slide over after you break the seal from the sealant they added for the screw holes.

You can jack up and slide over or you can lift up and slide over, depending what you have to work with.

Some have been able to switch with out moving the motor but I say 90% have to.

If he's going to cut the old cable, then couldn't he just start the new cable from the back without having to move the motor? Just feed the cable through the gunnel until you're able to put the back end into the tube... Maybe I'm missing something... :head:

wow well thanks scool 17 feet is the perfect lenth AND i had to take it to the shop because i couldnt get the cable thru the tube so he had to take the engine off and installed a new tube put it all back together and now the steering is perfect
