splicing in a new control box

Hi everyone. Looking for some advice.

I want to replace my engine control box. I have an older 86 Johnson GT150. It has the red plug. I have not found a direct replacement, but maybe this one could be made to work http://www.offshoremarineparts.com/4-5006180.html.

Is it as simple as splicing wires? I have a wiring diagram for the motor. Could I cut the plug off the old control box and splice into the new, or is it more compicated than that?

Are the throttle/shift cables standard, or is an adapter required?

Or does anyone know where i can buy a directly compatible control box? That would be simplest.

that's a good control box, if you read further down, it list an adapter to use on 95 and older outboards for the wiring plug. You can also look at Teleflex and Uflex control box's

I did see the adapter, and the price! For that much $, I am more than willing to spend the time re-wiring it myself. But I really want to be sure if I will not run into issues like switching the ignition to +12V versus switching to ground.

Im glad to know the BRP is a good unit, but i am also open to other models. I don't know enough to decide what i should get. That's where advice is most valuable. I don't want to conduct a $300 experiment only to try to return it (or buy another $300 worth of adapters and cables)

that is a good shifter, I've installed a couple, if you used a late model Yamaha shifter, it feels(and looks) very similar

Spareparts - thanks for the link. Ouch is right! But all i get are tailored ads based on my browsing history. What's the make and model of the shifter you are referring to?
 
when I wired my '75 merc 115 I used a universal shifter and wired up my own ignition and choke switches which I had previously robbed from a bass tracker with an evinrude when I repowered it w a honda....

many universal marine ign switches have provisions for both magneto style and coil style IE 12v+ for run or open circuit for run wiring
 
For the sake of completeness : I contacted offshore marine last night and had a reply this morning. That control box will work with my motor. The $200 harness makes it plug-n-play. So it appears to be only a matter of wiring it correctly. Unfortunately a wiring diagram is not available, but I can figure that out with an ohm meter. I have a feeling that, by the time I buy the Deutsch connectors and crimp tool the cost savings of DIY won't be that much.
 
I have a top mount bombardier control box with the johnson wiring harness (red plug) i just pulled from a blown 88 175

If interested let me know im sure we could work somethin out
