Speckled Trout & Mullet

Had visitors last week, so we took them out a couple of days for some fishing. Late starts, mostly wade fishing with live bait. caught some shorts and these 2 keepers. A guy came along throwing a cast net for mullet. Got to talking to him, found outwe had some friends in common, so he gave us the mullet. Made for a fine fish fry.

Phat, that's a nice catch and free fish, nothing better than that. (y) (y) (y) I didn't know you could eat Mullet, I always thought they were like our Bunker, bait? Enjoy!! 🇺🇸❤️🇺🇸❤️🇺🇸

Hey G, just saw the comment bout the edibility of mullet. On the gulf coast from Tampa to Pensacola, they are very good to eat. Other parts not so much. Not sure they eat them at all on the east coast. They are usually fried or smoked. Must be eaten when fresh, usually within 24 ours or less.

In the fall they a full of roe. The females have yellow roe and is very good when fried.

OMG - THE MULLET RUN - if I recall correctly we are in the same latitude Phat. In my 45 years of fishing the big bend I have never seen such a run of mullet. The canals were absolutely stacked with them. For the first time I saw snook and tarpon in the canal in back of the house. They wouldn’t bite anything I offered. Canals too deep for a cast net to be useful. My dad was looking down as he was the mullet whisperer. Nice catch too. Love it. Do you have many mangroves coming up where your at?
