Sending unit?

Replacing my sending unit and need advice on which way to point the float.

The one that was in the boat, I'm assuming was bad, when the tank was empty the guage indicated 1/2. I shorted the lead to ground and the guage went to empty, so I guess the guage is good. To late now I've pulled the sending unit out.

The last time I took it out when I was running aobut 20 it indicated full which I took as half. When I slowed down it went to 3/4 (1/4 tank). So which way would be best to point the sending unit?

Best type for accurate readings will be this type

after replacing the sending unit & guage a few times, i just keep the mileage on my gps and estimate mpg @ 2 and figure 120 mile range and fill up accordingly. i can usually nail the gallons within 2 or 3 .

That is what I'm trying to do. Most of my guages don't work so it is hard to keep track of what is going on.

If I redo the floor I would like to go with a 60 gallon tank. Right now I think I've got 46 or so.

If I don't use a reed type which way does the float need to point?

i don't think it matters. but on mine, the float was pointing toward the starboard side.

How well do you get an indication in the water? When on plane how close is it to sitting still?

I'm trying to find out the best position. Sorry for so many questions.
