Salt water

Do I have to do anything different to my boat to go in salt water?
I wouldn't ask if I didn't know...

TIA

your motor uses a closed cooling system, so the engine should be ok, spary teh engine down with a good protectant before you use it( I use Amsoil MP1) flush the engine after you get it out of the salt, then take it to falls lake when you get home, ride around on the lake for a while to completely flush the engine, plus, its always a good thing to have an excuse to run the boat around

All good advice for the boat...hose the trailer good after use and if it's painted instead of aluminum or galvanized, go ahead and kiss it goodbye...

Either way, hose the pi$$ outta it when you get done...and the rear end of your tow vehicle, draw bar, etc...

Like Reel said, give the rear of your vehicle a good hosing. But remember that the salt AIR will attack anything metal also... so while you're hosing down the rear of your tow vehicle do the underneath and especially the fender wells. In fact, it's really a good idea to take the car to the car wash after a trip to the salt and give it a good bath.

I rince all well like said, but i never do my truck, its high enough that it never gets went any way.

Going to the lake after is surely a nice idea, however if that is not feasible make sure you run the engine with muffs on when you get back.

Perhaps that is obvious, but wasn't mentioned, just making sure...

also, make sure your muffs are securely attached, so when you get the motor running and walk into the house to get a beer from the frige and your talking to your wife and she says"what is that beeping?" and it takes your salt & sun addled brain a second or two to put together the clues. then you dash out and find the muffs laying on the ground and your putting in a water pump the next weekend.

not that it's ever happend to me, just sayin

Just as a security measure i tether my muffs to the trailer. Too many times someone else needed the hose and they took the hose off the muffs and left the muffs on the lower unit. Caught it all but once and luckily that time another boater at the ramp let me know they were still on.

At least with them tethered to the trailer when you back the boat off they stay with the trailer.

its better to run the engine while flushing, it allows the thermostats to open and water to completely flush the engine. The vibration and heat from the engine tend to help as well. Flushing without running is better than not flushing, but I'd rather run them

actually, i try to do both. i run on the muffs for 5-10 minutes and then through the port with salt away for 3-5 minutes

do you guys think the flushing additives do any good? or do they just make us think we are doing good?

Some of the early flushable motors did not flush the lower unit and water pump, so be mindful of which you have...I'm like Spare...use the flush if ya wanna, but run 'em on the muffs too for the best clean out...
