Would like to ad a couple of flush mount rod holders above the recesses rod racks on my boat. I can't seem to find any shorter than 8". I would like to use stainless steel. Any ideas? Thanks, Barry

You can trim them off, I've done that on a previous boat but the problem is you cannot count on them to secure your rod and reel in a chop or if a good size fish hits and then goes slack, I had one jump almost out of the holder twice just barely got it in time.
They do make them with different angles to them which might help or you can cut off 8 inchers and use those rod holder inserts that fit inside and angle the rods out for trolling.
You can also make or buy from Cabelas and others a rack that you can put on or take off that has multiple rod holders or mounts for down riggers that go across your transom, they are popular with steelheaders and other big lake fisherman. Maybe Reelapeelin or Mac Attack can tell you more about them.

Why not use a hole saw an cut a hole in the top of your rod box to allow the rod holder to extend all the way down? If I'm not mistaken, it'll only protrude into the rod box by 2"-3".

Good find, CB...that's what I'd do LONG B4 shortening the rod-holder...they make 'em that length so they'll hold the rod...listen to what Willy is sayin' above...you don't want that... :P...

....no I dont run with em in there, BUT I have caught 30-50lb AJs and 20lb+ snapper out of those shortened holders. I wouldnt troll with them in there or catch acrobatic, airborn fish like kings out of em but for bottom fishin they are fine. It just depends on your use for them really.

PS, I do like the cut into the rod box idea better though. Had I thought of that I would have done it. ::)I will be replacing mine soon as they are old and ill go that route. 8)
