Hello:

As stated in my other posts I am looking for a V20 this year. I do notice some come up for sale with no power. SO I began looking at OB's to see pricing, and really just for fun. I notice there are 20" and 25" motors. Is there one that is to be used with the V20, or is it preference, and whats the difference?

Thanks

Rob

The ones that look like this are 20"'s:

The ones that look like this are 25"'s . Not sure what years they did what.

Most any of the V-20's could have either a 20" or 25" transom from the late 70's on I believe(before about 77 or so they were all 20" as I believe that is all you could buy in an outboard in hence why most of the early models were I/O's). Also many 25" transoms have been cut down over the years if somebody had a 20" shaft engine to use on one. 20" or 25" refers to the transom height from the bottom of the hull to where the engine mounts. Engines are available in different transom lengths to accomadate the different transom heights.

Thanks again!

My next question is what size HP would you least put on the V20. For example I see some with 150s and from what I read that is best for the V20, but with the ones that have no power, I have a 85 HP. If I wanted to put this on, instead of spending the money right away would I be wasting my time? Obvious it will move the boat, but would it be a waste?

Thanks,

Rob

85HP would probably just plane one out with a light load, with a heavy load it would take WOT just to get it on step. I would say a large V-4 would do the job in a pinch, but the performance wouldn't be great.
