Any one have any experience with this motor? It supposedly has around 300 hours and is priced at $2750

Thanks,

Rey

Price seems high, but argueably one of the best engines that OMC EVER built. The 150/175 loopers from 91+ have proven themselves time and time again to just run, but they do like there gas burning about the same as most 200's.

my uncle just bought a 97 for 2400. that engine might have had 50 hours max. cleanest one i have seen in a while. you might be able to get them to know 500 off.

I had a 1994 150 on my V and it was a great motor. I think over 12 years I put maybe $800 into the motor and alot of that was for a carb job. The motor was purchased new in 1996 and still ran like new when I sold it a few months back.

also the carbs are east to work on so if you are mech inlc. you can do that yourself.

UPDATE: Nevermind. For some reason I always thought my transom was 25" but I was just told that it's 20". The Johnson OceanRunner is a 25". Wow, do I feel stupid :)

Man, still doing research.... Anyone know what the compression should be on this
'94 Johnson 175 OceanRunner? What else should I look for when checking out the motor? The guy that bought my BlackMax hooked a volt meter before and after starting to see what charging is going on. Also, did the big screwdriver to engine to ear to listen for knocking. Checked the oil in the gear case. Checked spark plugs. What else is there?

Thanks,

Rey

The big screwdriver to the engine block while running was listening to the main crankshaft bearings...amazing how sound travels through a screwdriver, but you can hear smooth vs rough quite distinctly...you gotta know where the bearings are and put the tip on the block in the right places...

Checked out the motor this motor. 2 cylinders has around 87psi while the other 4 have 100psi...what your opinion on this?

Thanks,

Rey

The rule of thumb on that is that there shouldn't be more than 10% difference between the cylinders. At 87 vs. 100 you are exceeding that. Is this motor on a boat or a stand? Reason being is that what a motor does in the driveway and what it does in the water under load can be two totally different things. My 150 Merc was only running on 3 cylinders but sounded like a dream on the muffs...in the water wouldn't do squat. Ferm thinks its priced high anyway...maybe you want to pass on that one.I'm sure some of the motor gurus will come along and chime in soon.

The motor was on a stand and had been run for a minute or so. Fair amount of smoke like some have mentioned. Yeah, I'm leaning heavily away from this motor but just wanted other's opinions on the compression readings.

Thanks,

Rey

I'd walk away - too many better situations out there to get hung up on a weak one.

Compression is below the 10% range the other guy suggested.

Unless you want to buy it for $ 1,000 and rebuild, forget it.

Try ARG Marine's web site, Florida. Ask for Victor. I bought my used outboard there after SERIOUS shopping around. Had it shipped up to NJ, and was very careful about everthing.
Well, I got a great engine, saved a pile of money, and they shipped it in a strong sturdy crate. Good people in my experience, because I asked a LOT of questions and they answered to my complete satisfaction.

Regards

I agree. For a 15 year old motor, that is a high price., In that price range you can shop for something a lot newer than that.......
