Newbie Question

Hey guys just wanted to say thanks for all the info I have gotten from this site. I joined a while ago when I bought an 84 V that needed some TLC and since then I have gotten married and bought a house so needless to say the V had to take a back seat for a while. But slowly I am trying to get it right.
Which brings me to my question. I went through an issue with some bad gas and ended up adding a Racor with water seperator and some awsome fuel treatment (STARTRON). Also ended up changing a fuel fitting that was clogged up. When I got the boat it would top out right at 40 MPH and know I am only getting about 26 MPH out of it. It has a 175 Mariner on it. Kinda a side not that I dont think matters but I took out the leaking internal tank and have been running off an external tank. I have put new fuel hoses and new plugs in as well as flushed the carbs with fresh gas by removing the drains from the top down as i was pumping it through. I checked compression a few minutes ago and all the cylinders were around 75. One thing that was weird is when I opened the throttle before i did the compression test it let out a hiss sound. Could something be causeing a vaccum. That would definatly cause loss of power.
I know thats alot at one time but i have used the search function extensively on this site but this problem is stumpping me.

Yes it does. I even installed a new screen in the glass filter.

I quess what I am wandering is if the jets on the carbs have crap in them. She idles a little rough. If I have to rebuild the carbs I will I just want to make sure that is the next step before I rip them off.

I'd clean the carbs.
Rebuilding them may not be necessary.
Once in a while, certain carbs on certain motors got to certain locations. Mark or remember them as to where they came from, easiest thing is to do one at the time.
Clean the bowl thoroughly (carburetor cleaner in a spray can usually is fine), find a pick of some sort the same size as the jets you have, to ensure the jet holes are completely free of encrusted trash (a piece of wire, acetylene torch cleaning tip tool, correct size drill bit).
Normally it is the locations about 1/4" below the bowl gasket or float (locations where the gas just sits) that will have residue.
 
I had the same problem.
If you ever had water in the gas, some of that water got to the carbs, because some water particles "hang floating" in the gas and get to the carbs.
One clogged main Jet on one carb, renders that carb cylinder dead, and the engine will ride "smooth" on high rpm, but for each clogged carb you will have a dead or weak cylinder.
So cleaning the carbs is a very good idea.
So it is to fully cleaning the tank and the fuel lines and filters.
On two strokers, fuel mixture is VERY critical for power and lubrication. I remember when I used to fly R/C airplanes, where you have full control of the mixture on the motor, it was VERY important to set the mixture right or the engine will run weak or too powerfull and eventually loose comprression.
 
Well I got the gasket kits today to take the carbs off and clean them. Thanks for the replies and i will let you know how it goes.

Well due to some offshore trips I finally got the carbs removed and cleaned. I found the float on the bottom carb stuck down. Fixed that and cleaned all the jets and reinstalled. Ops checked the boat today. Ran great. Thanks for the advice..
