New v 20 owner here

long time lurker here and i must commend the v 20 crowd on their in depth knowledge of these fine boats. I bought a 1990 v-20 cc 2 yrs ago and am just getting ready for the first shakedown run. Been extremely busy. It is powered with a 225 evinrude 2 stroke and it seems a tad overpowered. This is my 12th boat starting in 1972 and primarily fish offshore , however this boat will be a beach cruiser/ sunset watching boat as i fish offshore in brothers 35 intrepid. I really like the style and layout of the boat but can any one comment on a 22 yr old boat with a 225 on the back? Transom seems solid, floor has a small soft spot around console and again i have no intentions of running offshore in this boat. Thanks for the valuable info ive gained from you guys ,ill send pics when i launch next week.

As long as the boat is sound there's no problem with a 225 engine on it. Mine's a 78' with a 225 and I have no problems at all. You should be fine. Welcome to the site

I believe the boat is rated for up to either 225 or 250 hp. you should be good to go.

I have a 1990 V20 powered with a Johnson 175HP and it hauls @$$. I read that it was rated for 225HP, but I can't remember what site. I think it may have been Iboats.com. I'm a newbie V20 owner, and have already had it offshore several miles in both 1-2ft and 2-3ft seas, and it handled very well. I absolutely love this boat and I'm glad I did a lot of research and bought it. The guys on this forum are a WEALTH of information. Welcome to the V20 club.

Welcome!!

No such thing as overpowered with a 225. I almost powered my 83 V20 with a 225 Optimax. My main fishing is offshore, most of the time 20 to 35 miles out. The V20 is a great all around vessel. Before i took her out of comission for some repair work, not only was she a offshore fisher, she was a family boat for watching fireworks, going to the beach, cruising, etc. Alot of our family memories are on her.

Simple transom test is to tilt the motor all the way up and push down on the foot watching for transom movement.

I recently went from a 140 to a 225. what a difference! you don't need every bit of that power but its nice to know you have it. open her up on a glassy day and enjoy getting your hat blown off! welcome to the site

Thanks a ton guys, looking forward to first run, Finishing rebuilding a used trailer for the v as it was sitting on an old steel trailer which i didnt trust as far as i could throw it.

Ft. Myers !!! Wow!!! I built a few house in ft.myers. my dads best friend was a builder and I went down there to run a crew for him about 8 years ago. He lived in arcadia Fla. We did a lot of grouper fishing in the gulf on his Mako. Welcome to the site. Do that transom test Jason talked about earlieir if you have any doubts.

I did the transom test a year or so ago. Im pretty confident the transom is ok. Are you still in the buisness? I am a remodeling contractor and also have a custom cabinet shop. I have been in Ft. Myers 30 yrs and we may have crossed paths at one point. Small world we live in. Thanks.

Oh goodie - another V with a 225 !!! How fast WOT !!

First run in the v didnt go too hot. Had mechanic buddy of mine rebuild carbs, Run # 2 was great. No gps or decent speedo but will guess 42-47.

I can attest to the durability of the hull though, I ran in the gulf in a pretty good chop and the boat felt solid and was pretty dry. Also on the way out i winged a manatee at about thirty mph. The boat launched to the right so i obviously didnt hit it with prop thank god.

This boat could use some trim tabs though.

Trim tabs make a BIG difference in the ride characteristic - I recommend it.

Put em' on mine and now can trim down to eliminate pounding, plus tune in the ride for assorted conditions. Getting the forward / cutting edge of the bow to work through the waves just enough settles the ride down very well.

Capt Pete's got another 225 runnin' around here...disguised as a docile 150...

and let's not forget the T-Topped CC complete w/bracket and 250 Opti on Ridgerunner's...his disguised as a BULLET...lol!!..

Oops!!...need to point out I took this pic before Vic swapped the 250 EFI for the 250 Opti...I think he's saved college tuition on fuel!!...and what I owe these two guys in V-20 Attaboy Coupons we'll save for another thread...

So no sweat on the extra ponies...yer V will handle it...welcome to the board and post us up some pics...doesn't matter the condition...we've seen 'em in all states of readiness...:fam:

Good call on the fuel consumption, this is the smallest boat ive owned in 20 yrs. But i love the simplicity of the boat. But guys i gotta tell ya this boat is fast but a hog on fuel, yikes. but i kinda dont give a sheit, I paid 2200.00 for the boat and a pos trailer, with a mega favor owed to my mechanic, and a 500 dollar trailer with cheap rebuild im still about 20k cheaper than my last 2 boats.I would not change a thing. Thanks for the input and info. Oh and i plan to post some pics, please bear with me as im a computer dumb arse.
