Nailed those blacks

I went fishing today 10/25 and me and my son nailed the blackfish. Unfortunately you can only keep one but I would say we caught 30. All nice fish up to 5 pounds. A lot of fun and that’s what’s it all about I also caught a porgy the had to be 3 pounds. Huge

Step, sounds like it was a great day 👍 - Keep getting out for as long as you can, as long as the weather holds up - Only 1 fish each is a killer - But there a couple of nice sammich's - That porgy is delicious - I hated cleaning them - They ruined the edge on the knife - When I filet them and fried them - Just like chicken tenders - Take a few pictures if you can - ENJOY your Black Fish:beer: 🇺🇸❤️🇺🇸❤️🇺🇸

I would love to post pictures ,but I don’t know how. Even the black fish are difficult to fillet . On YouTube they said to put a towel on the cutting board so the togs don’t slide. They are slippery. But 8love catching them.
I can’t go out 5his coming weekend ,but the following weekend I’m going I will keep youguys informed.

Step, I would put a rag on the board, then just toss it - To slimy for me to keep - Every where when I see people filleting the fish - One piece, just like I, guess all of us - What I don't see is anyone cutting out - What I call the spine - It's all small pins, it's at the end of the fillet - After I cut out that piece, the fillet looks like a V - Maybe I'm doing mine wrong, but I don't think so - I can't see how you can fillet the fish and take out that piece at the same time - Porgy's have the same thing - That's one of two things I can't stand - Pins in my fish and egg shells in my eggs - Am I right about this:unsure:  - If not, please help me with this - Hoping the weather holds out for you - Step, here's how I do a picture - I take the picture, put it in a folder on my computer, go to where it say's attach files, in the lower left corner - Click on that and it will ask what pictures you want - Pick it attach it, you can do about 4 or 5 - Just a sample of the fillet before and after- Good luck with the pictures 🇺🇸❤️🇺🇸❤️🇺🇸

Wow Giorgio you hit the nail on the head with that. I was on the computer( YouTube) and they said to do the rag under 5he blackfish. And of course I didn’t do it But next time I will ,and with the pin bones. I do cut them out, just like the picture.
Giorgio if you were fishing by sandy hook I would show you our spot I wouldn’t tell anyone but I would share it with you and you would say after we got there ,you would say. Cmon step there are no fish here. lol. I would say. Get crabs and try it. You would thank me after the trip. And when somebody ask you. Hey Giorgio where did you catch them? Tell them the reef. That’s what I do. lol. The problem is that if I tell other fishermen I would lose my spot but I would tell you. Only you.
I can5 get out till two weekends from now unless my other son who works on a party boat has a day off. He. Is. Coming. With. Me. Actually he told me about this spot. He is a smart kid. He takes after his mother lol.
I hope you can get out fishing again. You can do it.

Step, never tell anyone your spot 👎👎- Especially a Black fish one - A friend of mine had a spot, a good one - He took one of his other friends the next time we went out - The next time we went out, that guy was there with four other of his friends - In their own boats - Talked about being pissed
I didn't even go to his spot with my boat, it was his spot - Black fish are the only fish I don't give away spots - To me all other fish swim and follow the bait, so one day they are there and they next day gone - Tog are a slow fish, plus they are the slowest growing of them all - Example a 15" fish is 7 years old and a 22" is 20 years old - According to what I read about them - I did a lot of reading on them - What I did catch on to was two things - Big fish don't like to be around the smaller ones - When I start to catch a lot of small ones - I'd move to a different spot - Not that far away, maybe a few yards - The second, when we couldn't get out into the bay - We stayed in the creek and had a great spot - Where only his skiff would fit - Big fish and plenty - But I did notice the water temp, once it went below 56 - No more fish - It took me the 2nd year to figure that one out - They also like to come back to the same structure as they did years before - I remember years ago the big Black fish spot was the Shrewsberry Rocks
Is it still a hot spot - Because I don't hear about it any longer -
When I needed crabs I went to this Bayman on Long Island - He knew my uncle who also was a Bayman back when - I got a whole bushel for $20 - He didn't want me to pay a thing - I told him, that's your livelihood and it's a hard making a living being a Bayman - The 20 was the most he would take - There aren't many Bayman left - I think if it wasn't for the Black fish and the greenies, there just not be any more Bayman at all - Step, I wish I could get out again, but I can hardly walk now - It gets harder everyday - Sorry for this blow hard story, once I get going on these fish - GAG ME:beer: - Good luckthe next time you get out 👍👍

Down here the same goes for Black Sea Bass. People are tight-lipped, and for good reason. Good info on the tog, I didn't know they were slow growing. As for your stories Giorgio- keep em coming, we love to hear a good story!

I knew they were slow growing but I didn’t do much research on them. I was told by other tog fisherman that they release fish 10 pounds and over cause they deserve to live cause they are older. So if I ever catch a 10 lb fish. She is going back
The ones I’m catching I would say they are about 5 lbs and only allowed to keep one. I don’t know if it’s because I’m getting older but I hate cutting the crabs in half and killing them and I want to eat the blackfish but I hate killing them. When I was younger I didn’t even think about that but now ? I still do it but I don’t like killing them. Anyway ,I don’t want to bring you guys down but this spot we caught. Fluke, togs ( and still doing well with the blackfish) weakfish and sometimes blue fish. It’s a great spot and don’t see anyone fishing there. I’m planning on going out in two weeks. I willlet you guys know how we do.
Crabs? Green crabs. $7.00 a dozen and I don’t see fiddlers any more , what happened to the fiddler crabs ? 🦀 I hear they eat muscles too so I might bring some. Even if they don’t eat them I could chum them

Fiddlers are $15 - $20 a "cup" but I still haven't figured out what a cup is exactly? A "cup" varies so greatly from different workers at the same bait shop. I have gotten to where I normally tell them to dump a cup in my bucket and I'll let them know if I need another cup. Two cups normally do the trick for 1 day with some leftover for the next day. They seem pretty hardy if you keep them in a bucket and refresh their water throughout the day and refresh last thing before heading pulling the boat out. We've not had much trouble keeping leftovers for a day or so. Speaking of feeling bad for killing stuff, when I hook fiddlers I bury the barb in their "hip" and try to keep them alive for a few casts. Sometimes, we apologize for what we are about to do to them. :D

Green crabs are an invasive species - I have no problem whacking them - They come from Europe , Iceland, the Baltic area - They kill oysters, clams and mussels - These crabs should never be put back into the water alive - Blue, for a cup of fiddlers you pay that much - I don't know where you are, but I can get a 1/2 bushel of greenies from bernies in B'klyn for $40 - That's about 20 -25lbs - With fiddlers or Asians - One good chomp they are gone - With greens, at least you can cut them in half and if they are big, into fours pieces - I don't like those real big ones - Getting Asians or Fiddlers it take too much work - Asians are under rocks - At low tide you have to go and turn the rocks over and catch them before they get away I've done it a few times, not fun - Not good for your back - Fiddlers are in the mud or in the side of creeks -The reason they cost so much, a lot of manual work - With greens - They just throw out traps come back in a few hours and the traps are loaded with greens - They keep longer, especially now with the cooler weather - If you trailer, they stay well in the burlap bag on the boat or put them in a bucket with air holes for a day or two the most - I wouldn't do it myself - When they die - THE FREAKIN' STINK - Do not put water in it - If you dock your boat , just put them over the in the bag or the bucket, tie them over the side - Don't put it on the bottom, leave it off a little off the bottom - Question, what happens when you get back to the dock and you get ready to clean the fish and it's till alive, what do you do then 😂 - I fillet them anyway -The first video is how we stored them before we got their - As I called it, their playpen😂 The second is with the Playpen which held 1 bushel easy - The second one is from Up Front Bait & Tackle shop in Key Port New Jersey - They still charge $40, 1/2 bushel - The Tackle Box in Hazlet wants $50- Enjoy catching those TOG:beer: 🇺🇸 ❤️ 🇺🇸 ❤️ 🇺🇸

Great videos you post Giorgio together fishing with short pants on? That must have been a great day the next time I go Im putting on my winter pants. I hate being cold out there. The issue I have is this. I have no problem getting a half of a bushel but the problem is we are only allowed to keep one tog. The last time ( last week) we went out we were on the bite and they were chewing I don5 want to run out of bait and we didn’t. We got 4dozen and just made it. What I want to do is go to our spot and anchor up and fish for blacks all day but my son wants to look for stripers first I’m good with that but I really don’t care about stripers but I do love black fishing You know what sucks about New York and New Jersey they make it so you can’t keep any fish. Stripers between 28 and 31 I think and togs. Only one fish 15 inches or over. But I think after 11/15/25 you are allowed to keep 5 but that’s when the water is turned off at my marina.
