My little boat trip

Disconnected the vro harness and WOOT!!! No more alarm!!:sun: Before the hurricaine hit I put 22 gallons of non ethanol gas in the main tank, the guy that owned the boat before me said he had that tank drained and cleaned. I put my nose in the gas cap hole and it smelled like some strange chemical, Not gas so I figured he told me the truth about the tank being drained and cleaned. well after the storm due to me not having a boat cover the tank filled with water, after getting all the water out when I ran it it stalled out several times due to debris in the tank, I am starting to think the guy I baught the boat from is a total lair and that is the reason he wouldn't return any of my phone calls.

He told me he disconnected the vro and was pre mixing, but he didn't tell me that he jery rigged everything so I replaced the rotted plug to the oil in on the fuel pump and removed his old plug and zip tie he had it held together with, he also used a zip tie to hold the fuel line on the fuel filter next to the the fuel pump so i replaced all of that with new hose clamps and filter.
I got a external gas tank today for 22 bucks used 6 gallon and it works great, no alarms no fuel restriction, the boat ran great for the first time.
Now to figure out how to get all the debris out of that tank and save the 20gallons of gas in it.

I put it on the trailer and on the way home it's making a screaming sound and smoke billowing from the back of the trailer. 4 tires on the trailer and only 2 have dust caps so sand and saltwater got in the berrings. :cen:

It sure was nice to feel the power of my 200 hp and the wind in my hair and I almost lost my lucky fishing cap when I took off and had it at almost 7000 rmp for a few seconds then cruise at 4500 rpms. I must of been doing atleast 60mph.
I would like to give a special thank's to everyone who answered my questions and helped me get to this point of awesomeness.

Now to get to work on the trailer.
It's always something...
:sand:

Good to hear on getting the motor running wide open. Usually that is all thats needed when you wonder if all the work you do on an old boat is worth it. How much water got in the tank? You may be able to get a clear bowl Racor and let it do its job and drain it when the bowl fills with water. While you are doing the trailer bearings look at your springs and see if they need replacing. Better to do it all at once.

well I was told it's a 77 gallon tank by the old owner, but we put 22 gallons in it and the gauge read 1/2 a tank. Maybe its a 40 to 60 gallon?
anyways..... are you sitting down?
I pumped about 20 gallons of water out of the tank till I hit pure gas.
I have no idea how that much water got inside the tank, but the tank hatch is not sealed (big hatch under the console) and neither is the access hatch. I think it rained so hard for so long that the entire boat filled with water and the tank was sumeraged and it came in from everywhere.

but I did get the water out, but now I have debris clogging up the screen inside the tank.

The springs on the trailer are rusted but seem to be ok.
I am going to replace all 4 sets of bearings tomorrow.
I also have to replace one of the deck boards and several hinges and bolts due to rust, one of the boards wasn't bolted down and floated up on top of the board next to it and when i pulled her out of the water the bottom board snaped in half.

Bet. On. Another. Thousand.

20 gallons!???I'm wondering if your tank is not "perforated" all over and the tank coffin is the only thing holding the gas in.

I bet the tank has a hole in it some place. You can get it pressure tested to see were.
That tank will be 60 gal at most, they never had a bigger one in a V unless someone replaced with a custom one, but I would say no one ever did in this one.

When I got my boat the tank did not work, after draining and adding water with degreaser I rinsed it well and used a shop vac to suck out rest of water and anything else. let dry for a day in the sun, refilled and been fine till this day!

even 2 gallons seems like a TON to me! If the boat did fill with water it could have seeped in around the sending unit? I would check all hoses and reseal sending unit...also replace O-ring on cap

...or check to make sure the fill cap has a rubber o-ring seal. My buddy's boat kept getting water in the fuel. Finally found that the o-ring had fallen off (or never been there to begin with) and that fixed it.

Also check your vent if water is coming in thru it. I had to relocate the vent to the inside on my 250 Sportsman. Kept getting water, and just happened to look over and see the vent would get slapped with a wave. Cut the vent hose and rerouted it that trip. You should have seen the water puking out the cut hose from the vent.

yea I don't know where the water came in from, but I was shocked. After the storm me and my brother (who helps me do all of this till after my surgery and I loose weight so I can get in the boat and crawl around on the floor myself) cranked the motor and got nothing, so we kept priming the bulb and turning over the motor and still nothing, so I asked him to pull the brand new water separator off and hand it to me and i dumped it into a glass and it was pure water with a faint smell of gas. I had him put it back on and disconnected the fuel line to the engine and primed the bulb again to get fuel back to the empty water separator, after some time i hit water coming out of the line in my hand so I had him pull it off again, and dumped it again and still pure water, so had him put it back on and primed it again till i got water and hung the line off the back of the boat and just let gravity do it. and went inside. Kept checking it every 10 minutes till i went to bed. Next day I went outside to find that the stream had stopped, primed it and started to get gas/oil mix and gave thx to GOD. After hooking everything back up we started the engine and thought everything was OK and thats' when we took the boat for a test run and got stranded 3 football Fields away from the dock due to trash clogging up the lines. I pulled the fuel line off at the primer bulb and blew in the line going to the main gas tank. well it worked and made it back to the dock stalling every 30 seconds or so. but yea 2 gallons or more of water in the tank so today I am taking it to a friends house and we are going to drain the main tank, filter the gas and see if we can go fishing.

I will make sure we check for any leaks where the sending unit goes.
The air vent has the metal fitting on the side of the boat next to the gas cap with the holes facing down, so I doubt that is where the water got in. I will also check to see if the gas cap has a o ring installed.
Thank you all for the replys.

I do know it rained so hard for 24hrs, that you couldn't see my house from my neighbors house across the street, he sent me pics of my house during the storm from his front door and I could barely make out my house. So that means that my boat filled with water faster than it could drain out and that means my main tank was totally submerged under water.
