How much ?

My son has a blown 250 Yamaha outboard. I think 🤔 he should report it with a new 250 Yamaha
I would like to know ( I know you can’t give me an exact cost) how much would it cost to get a new Yamaha?
I would rather a mercury but it’s his boat.
He has a client list for charter. He is the best captain and fisherman that I know ( not because he is my son ) I was told that by other captains.
Also my other friend repowered his boat ,a 25 ft C hawk with a 250 tohatsu. Are they good? Are 5hey expensive ? And who fixes them ?
Any info would be appreciated. My son is a great person but needs direction.

You can probably get the new outboard for less that 25k, however you would also have to factor in sales tax. Also, from my experience, Yamaha will not activate the warranty unless either installed by a yamaha dealer, or inspected by a yamaha dealer. The install or inspection could add $500 - $1000 or more (just a guess). Assuming you don't need prop, controls or gauges.

everyone down here is jumping on the Suzuki bandwagon, mainly due to availibility & price
bout 3-4 grand cheaper

if he's in the charter business, i'd go with the brand the best dealer in the area sells.

$100/hp plus rigging. Honda=Tohotsu. The 4.2 liter Yamaha is a great engine with a good history, the mercury 250 is making waves as a good engine. If weight is an issue, I'd look at the 225 Mercury(V6), if you're going with teh 250, and its rated for it, might as well step up to the 300, it weighs teh same( both merc and yamaha). The suzukis are good engines, I still hear stories abo9ut corrosion( Hondas are still the worst). The biggest issue is who's going to service/handle warranty for you. Quite honestly, hard to go wrong with any of the newer outboards, they all have their issues and good points. If he can reuse wis old rigging( throttle/ harness/ gauges) you'd be hard pressed to not go back with a yamaha.

He has a 2010. 250 Yamaha with (he says ) a blown power head. He is a very good charter captain when his boat a 25 ft Parker was running. He wants to replace the power head ( that was 2 years ago ) and it’s still no5 fixed. I told him ,he should get a new engine. Take a loan, pay it off and start new. But he doesn't listen . It such a sham3 to see his boat just sitting there.
So back to the original question he could probably get a new engine installed with the controls somewhere about 25 grand.
Maybe a left over and go to Delaware. No tax in Delaware. What do you think?

Hey spare, do you know I can’t get any so called mechanic to rebuild my carb on a 1984 50 hp mercury. They say it’s to old. I bet if you were here. You can rebuild it in your sleep.

4 cylinder 50? I'm not a fan. Those old cross flows were built for a different time, now the 3 cylinder 40/50/60, especially the later models that were a bigger displacement, i.can make those sing

Find a small boat builder, they always have the best deals, they turn numbers to get a better deal. i got undercut by boat builders so many times, I gave up quoting motors.

That's the direction I went when I lost the Yamaha engine in Mathew. A dealer install to activate the warranty. I got the Suzuki in 2018 and it has served me well, although I haven't put a ton of hours on it. It was around 20% less expensive than a Yamaha. The dealer has been good to work with on maintenance.

Hey pipedream. Mathew
N.C?
Spare. 4cyl and when it runs it’s a great engine. It’s just the top carb that’s an issue with.
$30000.00 that’s crazy. That’s a new car hanging of the transom. Where do people get the money? I see triple outboards and quads. All 5he time. That’s over $100000.00 just for 5he engines. : maybe it’s me but I can’t afford that. Not even close
