Help me find a motor...

I've heard nothing good about the first one. The second one I have no idea and the price of the third one makes me want to cry after what I sold my 110 for.

Is this a money pit or a find?
02 Evinrude 115 w issues $1200

RUN FOREST RUN! Avoid a FICHT with problems like the plague.
1995 Suzuki 140 $1150

Good engine, but corrosion is a HUGE issue with them. SUZUKI used rather cheap aluminum castings that are notorious to corrode SEVERELY in salt water.
1985 johnson 115 $1600

Not a bad engine, just old technology. Also since it is an old tech crossflow engine, the fuel consumption will show it.
Any thoughts?
In red.

Thanks!

Kinda suspected the 02 was no go... Was really hopeful on the zuk but being houston it's surely been in salt.... Sad that the oldest and most expensive was the only prospect lol.

I assume there is no good way to tell if the zuk has corrosion probs until something fails right?

Striper there's a reason I wanted your 110....

the old blue and white ones were made out of fizzies, the red and white and red and gold (I think) were a little better, but usually not much.

electrical parts for those are very expensive.

i'm biased, but if i was looking for a motor over 10 years old, i'd have a carbed merc my #1 choice. (92-02). parts are readily available and not horribly priced. omc's are not bad for the same reasons, i've just had better luck with merc's lower units and blocks coming apart after living in the salt.

You kinda lost me on the first two lines... You talking about the 02?

I DO like a merc... My kicker is a merc... That said at my price point I can't be too picky.

The 1st thing to look at on a SUZUKI is to check the lower unit for cracks where the prop slides in. They corrode and split where the propshaft supports goes in 1st. The problem is they also corrode internally in the lower portion of the powerhead, and SUZUKI didn't think to make the zincs inside the powerhead replaceable without tearing the engine apart. Even freshwater used SUZUKIs can corrode out fairly bad. My grandfather bought an old pontoon boat that had never left Missouri, and the 87 SUZUKI engine had pretty substantial corrosion inside of all the cooling system.

I'm thinking of selling my 130 25" shaft johnson. I had it for sale on here last year. I have a jack plate as well.

115 Yamaha four strokes are starting to pop up on the used market pretty often. they are heavy, and not that powerful, but they are a good engine, I've seen them in the $2500-$3500 range pretty regularly, but like any used motor, they can be a money pit as well. Yamaha 150 are still bringing a premium >$5000

UGH... I don't know what to do..... Part of me says just hold off till I can afford more motor.... The yammy f115 would be mighty tempting but I wonder how well it would push my boat....

How do you think it would compare to my flywheel rated merc 115 TOP?

Looks like it would be close to 100 lbs heavier and what 30 hp more????

Talk to me Striper

It's a 96 130 25" with 126 hrs on the brp rebuilt power head since 09. Trim pump, lower unit seals replaced in 2012 and have under 1 hr. The kicker is the boat it was on was in Sandy. If was on the trailer and got knocked around pretty good. The power head wasn't submerged. I brought the boat home in December and the engine fired right up.

sooo, How many moneys?

I forgot that part. $1800 with the jack plate, controls, oil tank( replaced at the same time as the power head) and gauges. The binnacle might not work for you since its a side mount.

I don't really want to sell it, but a recent change has me thinking that I won't be able to complete my Grady, so I may have to.

Hmmm... Well honestly I can't use the controls and don't need the gauges...

I dunno man... If you had been closer to what you had on the 110... Of course I understand... You have a total package with this one.

I hear you. The 110 was a bit of an unknown engine to me and it was reflected in the price. This engine I owned and I'm somewhat reluctant to part with. Oh well you'll find one.
