Grounding fuel tank

Where did you ground the fuel tank too. I'm thinkin right to the neg. post on the battery and be done with it. The fuel tank i had made has a tab for grounding forward and aft. I dont think the old tank was grounded at all found no wires from it going to any ground. Fuel sending unit has a ground does that do the job or should i use one of the tabs to a ground.
 
Zebra...you are "grounding" two seperate things; FIRST you are grounding the fuel GAUGE.....SECOND you are grounding the fuel TANK...

Grounding the gauge, of course, allows the gauge to operate...it should be grounded to a "central" or "common" ground where any number of your boat's other (tach, radio, depth-finder, etc.) electrical components are grounded...if you wanna, you can ground directly to the neg. post on your battery, but it's not needed...

Grounding the TANK keeps Zebra from goin' POOF while fuelin' his boat...while you are fuelin' your boat, the gas goin' in displaces the fuel vapors commin' out...slightest static spark from nozzle arching to fuel-filler fitting and, as mentioned above...Zebra go POOF... plastic (vinyl) will create a static discharge QUICKER than metal...

SO...your tank should have three (3) wires attached to the top of it; POS to the POS on the back of the gauge; NEG to the NEG on the back of the gauge; AND "GROUND" which runs from the tank itself directly to the underside of the fuel-filler fitting...

I just grounded the tank to the neg. post on number one battery. and the fuel sending unit ground.
 
Once again, I am resurrecting an old post with a similar question. A few people have asked, but I haven't seen an answer yet. - Do you have to ground a plastic fuel tank, and if so, - how? - It seems like a silly question, but I've read about static build up on the plastic tank. Any way to safely deal with it?

if I can have CB on the boat, with the amount of gas he has, and nothing happens, I am not worryed about the ground on the gas tank!!

W/ that much ''gas'', you better figure out a way to ground CB!! :o...

Carl, when it comes to igniting gasoline vapors and knowing how much static discharge a plastic tank can generate, I'd ground it... ;)...
 
Look at it this way, you can worry about it and try to figure out how to do and think you are safe, and you forgot something and Boom it goes any way!!

Or do nothing and no worry and you might go Boom??

Eaither way you not going to no anything happened cause you not going to be here anymore, you be in a 100' Sport fisher in the huge pond in the sky, catching anything you want!! ;D
