Gas tank hatch

Should the hatch over the gas tank be caulked around the seam? I took it up to clean the connections for the gas guage wiring. Still does not read...

I wouldn't, but if you feel you have to then I'd suggest that you use a removable caulk and you should be fine. Dap Seal & Peel would be my choice. It goes on clear and you can peal it off if needed.

i used 4200 on mine, it will come off if i need it too. but do nothing till you get the gauge working!! you don't :want to do it then find you have to take it off again

Destroyer did you maybe think he meant the small pie plate over the fuel sender? I think its a must that you seal the hatch that covers the entire tank (assuming I am reading it right). Any water that gets into the tank coffin will not drain as it is sealed so it's must. By the way I used clear 100% silicone on mine based upon a recommendation here and it looks good against the gray floor.

DITTO!!!! Definitely seal it....seal it with clear silicone. cheaper than 4200 and works great, pulls out when you need it to

I sealed mine after painting w/ silicone caulking. It's pretty easy to remove and I'm glad it is because i have a corner that came loose and now I have to remover it and re-glue the wood backer.

Which is exactly why I suggested the Peal & Seal from Dap Co. It's a silicone based caulk that seals really well, just like any other caulk, but if you have to remove it you just grab one corner and tug and it comes away nice and clean....no scraping to remove residue.

Is it available in clear?

GE has a product that i believe is called (Shower ready ) good stuff, i use it between the glass and shower base which as you all know is where all showers seem to fail and leak. this is what i'll be using this week as i have to pull up my fuel hatch that i just built and installed because some looser tried to steal my gas and it rained like crazy and i dont know how many days the fill cap has been off and how much water got in. sorry did'nt mean to steal your thread just got carried away!
