From straight 6 to a 4.3 V-6 costs

Anyone, have any idea how much it should cost me to change out the old straight 6 to a 4.3 v-6 mercruiser along with a new outdrive? I am guessing around $6,500 Does this sound about right?

I would guess closer to $8-9K for a 4.3 repower. The 3.0L package is running around $6K the last time I checked. Don't forget new harness's and cables as well as guages while your at it.

I recently re-powered with a new 4.3 litre v6 mercruiser. I did not have the outdrive replaced. I purchased the engine for $3800 over ebay, with $200 for shipping. I had my mechanic take out the old engine and replace it with the new one. That ended up costing about $2800, which included $900 for replacing the stringers and some $ for a new bilge pump and tilt trim pump. So, I put about $7000 into just getting the engine replaced. I purchased the engine from NuWave boat restoration in New Jersey. They frequently sell engines and packages over ebay. I am very happy with the new engine.

P.D. THAT 6 CYL INL-LINE IS A VERY GOOD ENGINE, BY THE WAY, NOW IF YOU HAD A 470 I WOULD CHANGE IT.

I was also recommended bracket and outboard. It would be the way I would go except for cost. I am not confident in used outboards. They can be a great deal, or a piece of trouble. Brand new outboards on a bracket are prohibitively expensive. Used outboards on a bracket are fine for those who can do the work (or most of it) themselves. Unless your sterndrive is toast, I would go with a new motor (like mine, but maybe a v8 with 220 hp) and overhaul of the outdrive.

I THINK 6 IN-LINE IS A GOOD MOTOR, CHEAPEST WAY IS REBUILT THAT MOTOR AND THE OUTDRIVE. LET ME KNOW IF YOU NEED HELP WITH PARTS.

There is no way, except maybe if you are a commercial fisherman, to justify spending money on a boat. Therefore, go ahead and spend as much as you possibly can without justification. ;D

Randleman, you are a gentleman and a scholar.

Once you go Volvo, you'll never look back.  They're way nicer to drive (cone clutches), way easier to maintain (the only time the outdrive needs to come apart is for the bellows and the cone clutches eliminate a lot of shift cable problems), they seem to be lower maintenance, but they cost a fortune to fix when they break (which is rare).  Of course, these are the old Aquamatics, I haven't driven the current SX drives.

It would probably be best for you to keep the I6 in there now, though. The inline configuration really makes the engine easier to work on. Otherwise, if you're going to go 4.3, you might as well go 5.0/5.7L. You obviously have the space since you'll be going from a 6 cylinder long engine to a 4 cylinder long. Except for the length, the dimensions of the 4.3L and 5.0/5.7 engines are the same. Parts are mostly interchangeable between engines but you'll find some parts for the 5.7 cheaper.

If you don't mind me asking, how come you're changing out the old straight 6 to a V-6? The straight 6 is a pretty solid engine. Just wondering.

I agree about the inline 250. Plenty of power for the 20'.

If it were mine(I just sold one)I'd keep that 6, a proven engine which is sooooo easy to work on and cheap to rebuild if needed......

Did I mention economical? ;)
