Fixed a few problems I noticed the other day. First the new starter I bought last year was dragging and killing my battery. Took it off and tore it down and found the shaft going through the armature broke behind the bendix. Ive been messing with motors all my life, never seen the shaft break in half. Took an old starter apart and cleaned and used the old armature. That fixed my starter trouble, starts like a dream now. Next was my power trim pump, had to tap it to get it going. Took it apart and the brushes were stuck in the brush holders, had alittle green corrosion in them. Pulled all the brushes out , cleaned the holders and the armature up and put it all back together. Cleaned the reservoir and pickup screens and replaced the trim fluid. Runs like a new one. Boats really take a lot of time to keep them right.
 
not many people know how to do that now a days. :clap: I once took the starter off a truck in Kentucky Fried's parking lot, disassembled the starter with a pair of vise grips and an adjustable wrench. Freed up the brushes, put it back together and had the truck up and running before our order was ready. Fired the truck up and headed for the lake.

So true... ppl now days just take it to the dealer and pay through the nose for something they could fix themselves with just a little sweat and time. $95 per hour for labor? and then they soak you for the parts and a disposal fee on top of it... And no one even flinches ...!!!!!!
 
Yea, my Dad was an electrican and me being a mechanic has payed off quite a few times. I enjoy fixing my own stuff and stuff for other folks. Its saved me a lot of money.
 
CF..just curious as to which starter you have. Seems to be the worst PIA with my 470. So far 2 starters in 1 year. Yesterday new Arco started crapping out after 4 trips.. don't get it. Thinking about switching to Delco (now have Prestolite) Any opinions anyone?
BTW I did get to try the 19p mirage and it put my rpm range where they should be at 4300 wot.
 
Arco makes a good product, surprised you're having issues. Take a battery load tester and load test your battery, then move the positive cable from the tester to teh solenoid on your engine, load test again, then put teh positive clamp back on your battery and move hte ground clamp to the starter and load test. This will check your cables and connections. It will show if you have a bad cable or ground. Do you have the Ford type starter or the Chevy type starter on your engine? The worst one to swap out was the one with teh two small studs in the block. I took a 5/8 wrench and heated it up to bend it so I didn't have to remove the heat exchanger. The Chevy style starters are usually thru bolted, I just put teh ratchet on teh back side of teh bell housing and put a wrench on teh nuts.
 
I think my starter is the prestolite style. Had to remove the heat exchanger and use a couple of different wrenches to get the top bolt out, PIA! I bought it from a site I found online, it did great until the armature shaft broke half into. Does that Mirage prop come in different diameters?
 
they generally adjust the diameter from pitch to pitch to try and even out the rpm drop from each pitch number. If you want a little more rpm, have your prop repair shop look at it. They can usually tweak another 200 rpm out of them
