Fishing with wire

Looking to setup some wire rigs to troll for stripers. I was thinking of buying some cheapy setups cause I heard the wire really destroys your gear. Anybody got any suggestions about rods and reels that they've had some luck with. ???

They make rods with rollers instead of the normal eyes, that's what you'll need for wire line. I'd skip the wire line and go with heavy test braided line. I ditched my wire line this year because the braided works better (goes to the bottom better in deeper water) , is cheaper, and easier to deal with than wire line. Just my 2cents! My Penn 320s have worked just fine for wire/braided/mono for catching stripers.

I make my own rods, I have a nice Lamiglass blank I made with carbide guides and a roller tip.

I use a Penn 114HS with all wire, I use a 4 foot leader of 100# Jenki mono, with a 5 oz jig.

If you are new to wire You can have the guy that spools it for you to put a 3 or 4 foot mono between each 100 foot section, this will allow you to no how many 100 foot sections you have out (normaly 300) and you can jig on the mono instead of the wire.

I use all wire and been doing it for a long time. But I kink it from time to time and there goes all the wire to the sea.

It sucks to fish this way!! especially when there are all shorts around!! But when the fish just arent biting this will save the day!!

What are you using for braid??
Are you using a heavier jig?
how much braid do you have to let out to hold bottom?

I can hold bottom with as little as 3oz with wire in 30 feet of water.

I agree wire is a pain!! But it works!
I am opened minded! If braid works thats the way to go!!

Braided worked better than wire to get to bottom while trolling. I wouldn't have beleived it until my cousin brought his rod w/ braided on a trip earlier this year and he was staying deeper than I was w/ wire line and didn't need to let out as much as I did (we were using the same weights and type of rig...just different colors)... That's when I ditched the wire line.

Plus the braided line is thinner so you can get more on a spool. (and that's also why it trolls deeper/easier than wire)

Thanks fellas!!! I am amazed braided works that well. I got it on my surf rod, but never really thought about it for trolling. I thought i would need downriggers to use it.

Hey guys, why in the world do you use wire line?

Im confused...why not just use wire leaders? Hardwire leaders will handle any toothy critter I catch offshore so why not a striper?

I didnt think they were toothy neways?
