F250 on a 1990 V20 CC

I have a 1990 V20 Center Console and am looking to repower. Previous motor was a 1989 Yamaha V6 Excel XF 225 2-stroke. With all of the performance figures I have seen on paper I am thinking the F250 would provide the most similar performance to the old 2-stroke. It is adding about 160lbs more than the old motor and I am expecting that that weight will sit a little higher and the stern will sit a little lower in the water as the F250 is physically larger. Does anyone have any experience with this combination and if so what are your thoughts?

youre adding more than 160 lbs. Posted weight is dry, meaning no engine oil or gear lube, or propeller. Your old engine was on the heavy side for a 2 stroke, but you'll be adding around around 200 lbs to the transom if you go with a new 250. The new 4.2 liter Yamahas are great engines, but they are a bit heavy for your application. I personally would be looking at the 175/200/225 V6 mercury's. They are far better performing engines than the In line 4 Yamahas at that same rating, and weight, but make more power. Buddy of mine is a Scout dealer and was showing me the performance comparison between the 175/200 Yamahas and the 175/200/225 Mercurys and it was eye opening. There's a reason Scout sells more Mercurys than Yamahas nowadays. Keep in mind, the 225 Yamaha is the same engine as the 250/300 so the weight is going to be the same. They had a SHO series that was lighter than the standard model( not by much), but it was only available at 20 inch length and usually has mechanical controls.

Hey Charlie, welcome! Great information from Spare. I'll say I don't recall ever seeing a V20 with a 250 on the back, but it is possible there are some out there. Having said that, we'd love to see some pics of your boat!

Spare, haven seen any of the 150/200R in the wild?

Charlie, find you a 200 opti, put a new compressor on it and enjoy1

Haven't seen 150/200 r yet. Looks like they run the old style mid, lighter cowl and get the next hp size tune. Should be a good engine on a light hull. Will be interesting how it compares to the oldstyle 2.5 2 stroke

From my days in the industry, I don't recall who, but I was told the regs require the cowling to be withing 10% of the rated HP. And that Yamaha, for longevity, rated on the conservative side while Mercury always pushed the envelope for performance.

Generally, the mercury xs,xr, or r series was pushing the envelope of the SAE 10% rating. Same with the OMC xp and gt. Yamaha was never consistent in it, especially on the 4 strokes. The early f150 made close to 180 hp,the later model 150 made 150, the sho 175 is just a 200 with stickers and a lighter cowl. The 250 sho is a powerful motor that's lighter in weight than the standard engine and comes with a high performance gearcase. The early 200/225 v6 4 strokes were basically the same motors with only different stickers, the early 250 was different motor(vvt).

Just curious why are you getting rid of the 2stroke?
If anyone knows of anybody getting rid of a 150 1988 mercury 2 stroke. Running or not. I want it.

I think they are basically the same. Parts should be interchangeable. I’m going to Georgia in the near future I will reach ou5 to you when im going down. I really just want one for parts for my engine. Parts are getting hard to get. Does that have a clam shell cowl?

yes, clam shell cowl, horizontal reed 2.4, $1000 with the stand and what ever i have to go with it (spare set of carbs, etc..) Engine is in Charleston right now
