Engine poll: please everyone respond.

Damn this is hard... Speaking for myself, I have a 1991 200hp Merc on my Cruisers, and a 1991 200hp Johnson on my V. With the exception of the heat censor problem on the Merc that I mentioned in a different post I've really never had any problem with either engine. Both are strong, reliable units. I've never had a Yamaha except as a motorcycle, so I really can't comment on them other then to say that everyone I know that has one swears they are the best thing since striped bass. My point being that IMHO there are good and bad in every brand of motor. If you don't abuse your motor and you make sure it's well maintained it should last you for a long, long time.

Don't count out the 140 OMC, it is one STRONG 140HP. I know my 140 on my 19' BOWRIDER outran a guy in a 18 GLASSTREAM with a 175 EVINRUDE on the back, and to top it off I had 5 people in the boat to him being by himself. Needless to say he came over scratching his head looking at my boat when I pulled up on the bank wondering why my engine was so short.

Might you have been tinkering a might w/your 140?...LOL!!...I had a 140 on a 17' Thunderbird before the V-20...OK performance, but on best day wouldn' outrun a 175...w/him loaded and me light...

Just a little:sly:, but they still run good stock. I ran a V-20 center console with one that would leap on plane and ran mid 30's if not close to 40 when you hammered it.

#1 if it runs well, is reliable and will get you out on the water for the summer. Then just keep scouring the ads in case it breaks down on you. And go ahead and replace the impeller.

Ditto.

However,..I like the Yamaha s alot. The 90 I had was bulletproof even after being sunk twice.

I'd vote for teh Rudes, which ever one was fresh water. Old Yamahas get real expensive real quick when you start replacing parts. Contrary to popular belief, they do berak down, figure double the price for any parts comparable to a Merc or Johnrude. Around here, we don't rebuild Yamaha lower units, we repalce them, it ususally takes big hammer, chisel, and torch to get one a part after its been in salt for a while. DOn't forget the trim systems(probably Yamahas weakest point), only recently has there been any aftermarket trim motors available for Yamahas, soem of the oem motors are staggering in price

YAMAHA 150!!!!!!!

I've had 3 V-20s. First had a 115 johnson. Underpowered. Second had a 150 Yamaha, PERFECT match up. Current has a 200 Yamaha. Screams, but a tad overkill. I thought the 150 was the ideal match up. And hands down Yamahas have been the best engines I've ever had.

Only because it says "everyone respond", I will throw in my worthless and opinionated response.

:hi:

I would throw a new impeller in #1 and be proud to have an American made motor on the back of my boat.

Ok, after much looking and consideration, I have put a deposit on a 1988 200 Evinrude. The catch is that when I called the guy about his motor it turned out he had a 1988 200 evinrude which is going on my 20dc, a 21' Sea Ox with a 1988 Johnson vro 200(needs a powerpack), and a 1988 175 parts motor. The Boat sits on an ez loader trailer that is in pretty good shape other than some hardware surface rust. I ended up taking the package deal. Now the dilemma is which boat to keep... I wonder if I can swing keeping both... lol
