Drive shaft axial play??

While pulling apart the old water pump assembly, I noticed a little bit of wobble in the drive shaft at the upper cone bearing. There is some axial movement of the shaft when I pull up and down on it, maybe 1/16" if I had to guess. When I pull the shaft and bearing up into the bearing race, it feels smooth with no binding or rough spots. This leads me to believe the upper taperd bearing is ok. The retaining collar also feels like its fully seated. My question is how much axial movement should there be on a 150hp Merc? I understand that this movement also effects the contact pattern between the pinion gear and drivin gears. And ideas, comments, suggestions while I am this far?
Thanks

does it have a spring loaded pin on the top of the drive shaft? If it does, it pushes the shaft down to load the bearing, if it doesn't, the gears are cut to push up to load the bearing
