Cracked Lower Unit Repair

The Lower Unit on my Yahama 150 is cracked :(. It starts at the prop and runs for about 3" parrallel to the drive shart toward the seal. I drilled a hole at the end of the crack and epoxied it but as i thought would happend the epoxy didnt last long. I'm wondering if i can have this welded and if anyone knows a good welder in central NJ?

You can weld it but usually you need to remove all the gears and seals.
This is usually cost prohibitive compared to just replacing the foot.
 
Had the same issue with my Merc lower unit this spring.

As tsubaki says, its really not worth the effort/expense to have it welded. I found a complete, used one on Ebay in great shape for about $400 delivered.

Installed a new water pump, bolted it up and off I went!
 
I ended up having it welded today. The guy only charged me $50 so I figure if it doesn't hold im only out the 50 bucks. I didn't take out the seals just left oil in the case and he opened the top plug to releave any pressure building up. Now Im going to pressure test the case to see if the seals are still good. My question is how do i preform the test. I have the guage from a friend but he doest even know how to use it! I've read 5psi with no oil for 5 minutes, this sound right?
 
You ain't lost nothing doing it the way you did.
Two concerns are if the weld is good and if the seals are damaged.
Immerse the foot for a period of hours in a drum.
Also engage the gearshift making sure the prop don't contact the sides of the drum. Keep plenty of water in the drum for when the prop throws out most of it.
Drain the foot, check the fluid for water contamination and other debris associated with the weld.
If everything comes back good less any contaminants refill the foot get brave and put it in the water and try it. Bring it back home and drain the foot again.
You get the idea.
 
I've seen what you are attempting work about 40% of the time.
The guy did good suggesting fluid in and the plug out.
