ARs...Help Me Understand

I have 5 guns...two hand guns and three shotguns...had I ever taken up deer hunting, there would be one or two deer rifles. Gun ownership I get. ..but haven't been able yet to wrap my head around the need to own an AR w/30 shot clips. I shot one recently and it is quite a nice weapon, but I just wouldn't care to own one.

I know several here do and that's cool...I'm not tryin' to be snide or anything...just trying to understand the need for private citizens to own these...I'm spending time fighting the very loud gun control people in my life right now and I have no defense for ownership of AR-type weapons...anybody wanna jump in here?

And please answer this from a personal perspective...let's not make an anti-Obama thing of this...it ain't a political question.

Very simple... this is america and we don't have to justify anything we own with "needs"
I don't need a 30' boat. Nobody needs a 500 hp hotrod. Nobody NEEDS thousands of things that we all own or wish we owned. Many of those things can be very dangerous in the wrong hands...
Imagine how many people could be killed Bob Motz decided to plow his 200+ mph jet powered semi into a school. The AR isn't what kills people but the evil nutjob person is...... A person hell bent on death could kill 20 plus people very quickly with a chainsaw, machette, 22 revolver with speed loaders, or even a baseball bat.

Take one weapon away and the psycho will simply find another.... Sad but true

Owning an AR is just like any other thing .... because we can.

i own on for the same reason I own a 22, it was(until the reelection) a cheap way to go plinking, up until recently, good premium ammo was 20 cents a round, now since the reelection, its gone up to +50 cents a round. If you like shooting longer range than a 22 lr will cover, the 223/5.56 was the cheapest way to go. For those that hunt, an AR has become one of the best hog guns out there, especially when you have multiple hogs to get. Prarie dog shooters have been using the ar platform for 30 +years, its become very popular with most small game hunters. It bridges the gap between rim fire and full load large caliber rifles. For the non hunter, ar's have become adult legos. allowing each person to tailor their gun to their own needs with out having to have a gunsmith on retainer. There are plenty of other guns out there that are fare more effective that don't enjoy the popularity that ar's do just because you have to be a machinist to modify them to your taste. Contrary to what the media says, painting a gun black, accessory rails, putting a muzzle break on it, adding a pistol grip, and giving it a military name doesn't make it any more dangerous than any other gun. if they used common sense, rather than political rhetoric in the media, they would be far more worried about "Turkey Style" 3 1/2 magnum shotguns(who cares about bullet proof vest, teh impact alone will kill you with out going thru) and flat shooting bean field(sniper) 300+ caliber rifles that will reach out and touch some one from 1000 meters. IF I were going to equip a fighting force, that's what I'd equip them with,

personally, i think we need tighter controls on subscriptions(anti depressants) than we need on guns and why keep medical records sealed?

reel, ask your wife about the shoes she owns. Place that same perspective on firearms or anything else. Personal preference, it's an illness.
I for one don't like semiauto's but do own them and use them. My problem is I primarily use a firearm for hunting and target purposes. Picking on the long guns, I prefer a single shot.
For my purposes, a magazine longer than what a 5 round would hold is too aggravating in an AR type setup. But i do have several 40 rounders, 30's and 20's.
Using women's shoes mentality, I got 12" pumps and look good in them, aggravating as they are, the 4" just don't do it for me.
And two deer rifles ain't enough!

Trained on them, went to war with one, and shot thousands of rounds thru them. I like 'em. Its a nice weapon. Only natural I would want one on the *outside*.

Thanks for the honesty, Guys...in short we own them because we WANT to own them...and yer right smoke...beyond wanting them there shouldn't be any further explanation required...I've got things I want, just cuz I want 'em. Pretty simple really. I just wanted to see if there was something more to it that I was missing.

I don't own one. Never saw the need for one. I have 10 long guns (mostly 12 ga shotguns), but I have a .22 Marlin semi-auto that can hold 18 rounds, and another Marlin lever action chambered in .35 Remington for use if I ever need to "reach out and touch something". But just because I don't own an AR doesn't mean that if I want one I shouldn't be able to buy one. I simply don't want one. I'd hate for someone to be able to tell me that I can't have it. Really, it's no more dangerous then my black powder muzzle loader. Both can do what they are designed to do. And for that matter, so can my hunting knife or my filleting knife or my sons alum baseball bat. The problem isn't the gun, or the type of the gun. The problem is the person holding the gun. And I don't know a single person alive that can tell me when an otherwise normal person is suddenly going to "snap" and reach for the gun that he or she has safely owned for the last 20 years.

The issue here is that the AR to guns is like pitbull to dogs. Everybody talks **** about a pirbull but its just simply a dog that's choosen to to be mean because of its owner . AR are choosen because they have a huge market for high Capacity clips and cool accesories. Now see im a hound dog kind of guy, i own 20 long guns and 2 pistols all bought for a sole purpose. I have no need for a AR but if I want to buy one and customize it I should be able to because I'm a responsible law abidding gun owner.

I have an arsenal of weapons,... handguns, long guns, shotguns and assault rifles. I do not and have not hunted about 12 years and all of my weapons now are for my entertainment purposes only. So why do I own assault rifles with 30 rnd mags? Because they kick ***!

When something bad happens like the school shooting everyone is quick to find blame in something. Whether its guns, lack of religion or whatever. The fact is, people can do some pretty messed up things no matter if there no access to weapons, they are raised loving Jesus or...

People think back to when they were kids and recall how they did not have to worry about things like this but the truth is senseless tragedy has always been a mainstay in human culture. The problem is the media now glorifies these idiots making them "immortal".

In 1927 the Bath School dissaster occured, 38 people died (mostly children) and 50+ people were injured. This was done with rigged explosives throughout the school way before any of us were born. If there is a will there is a way and people have always been crazy.

Up here in Canada the Government introduced gun control. For the life of me I can't understand how gun control will ever help prevent someone or persons doing something as evil as taking the life of an innocent. If a bad sole is going to do something bad does anyone truly think using a legal or illegal gun is going to enter in to their mind set…

When the second amendment was written it was written for one purpose and one purpose only. To guarantee the "People" would never be held hostage by an overbearing government or tyrannical ruler. Period.
That is why it is the second amendment and not the 6th or 7th.
It stood in importance to the Free People second only to the right of free speech and the right to assemble.
It guaranteed all the other rights enumerated in the Constitution. It was correctly assumed that someday the government would attempt to control the People as all governments and the people who are part of them always have done through history. And being the brilliant and practical men they were they also specifically stated that it was the right of the People to stop any such usurpation of the People's God given rights.
In it's day, the flintlock musket was the assault weapon of choice. Carried by all the militaries in the world, quick to reload, devastating fire power. Able to mount a fearsome and deadly bayonet.
In King Georges era civilians were not allowed to own such military weapons as they were solely for the Rulers troops.
Well times have certainly changed, the weapons of the military are no longer single shot flintlocks. And neither should the weapons owned by the People, in fact up until the control of the media by the Progressive/Socialist Agenda types, like our current President, Pelosi, Reid, Schummer etc. the People were always trusted with the same weapons with some exceptions as our military. Just not full auto assault weapons and explosive type munitions.
In fact there is a Civilian Marksmanship unit of the federal government in place even now that provides semi auto weapons to civilians for the purpose of maintaining a strong civilian cadre of well trained and well armed people.
We are watching in very quick steps the erosion of the Constitution by an unchecked out of balance centralized government.
Any government for example that can tell you you must buy a product and seize your property and put you in jail if you dont comply is so far out of the Constitution that anyone who cannot see that does not have a clue about being an American and what rights and responsibilities that brings forth.
Any government that can vote itself the power to seize an American Citizen and hold him indefinitely under the guise of national security or to kill an American Citizen for the same purpose, determined by only those in power at the time is capable of anything.
And there is literally only one thing that stands in the way of this government.
Only one thing that stands for the defense of the Liberties against such a government.
That is Free Men, armed with weapons suitable for doing so.
That is the sole purpose of the Second Amendment. It has nothing to do what so ever with hunting, target shooting, or simply home defense.
It is about power, and once you can disarm, the people there is nothing that can stand between you an absolute power.
If you need something to say to someone who cannot understand why you would want to have a semi auto rifle, just simply say "I am a Free Man, an American Citizen, and it is my duty to keep it so for myself, my children, my fellow Americans".

"Gun Control" is nothing more than "Citizen Control". It's a thinly veiled way for the government to control it's citizens. Nothing more. Period!! Take away a persons ability to defend themselves and they must rely on the government to do it for them. And they can NEVER overthrow their government again... they have lost their freedom.

And just another thought, personally on this horrific shooting in CT. Had I been there, I would have shot this son of a biiatch dead, in his tracks. Because I am a armed American Citizen and I would have done what I had to do to stop such a crazed lunatic.
That being said, we no longer have many armed American Citizens around in the north east especially. We are an area of the country with a population of sheeple who elect rulers to control everything in our lives. And to give us free sh!t. Taken from others who earned it. Myself and family excluded.
Now this crazed scumbag killed both of his parents, then went to the school and shot little children down.
WTF
Are there any thinking men and women who believe someone so possessed by evil would be concerned at all about what the law says about possession of a handgun?
Does anyone, anyone, believe a law passed to control the People would have any effect whatsoever on whether this scum of the earth would destroy countless lives any way possible?
So, then what is the motive of those who would use such a tragedy.
There is only one true motive, a deceitful, lying seizure of liberty, for the sole purpose of control.

Initially, using a terrible incident for their political control, those in power in the Australian Government forced registration of all firearms, under threat of imprisonment, then once that was accomplished went door to door kicking them in when needed and seized the People's weapons.
Now, as in England, the crime rate is through the roof. The only ones with weapons to defend themselves are the police and the criminals.
The citizens are the sheeple in the middle and dieing every day.
In Florida, massive criminal activity brought about the "Shall Issue Law"
hundreds of thousands of Floridians are licensed to carry a concealed weapon. What happened?
Crime rate dropped, 40% in two years.
Who did the scum start targeting? Tourist's, Why? because they were the only ones the scum was sure was not armed.
Anyone who tells you the government is just looking out for the "folks" or the "children" when they seize upon a horrific tragedy to push their Agenda is outright stupid or just meant to be under the control of someone anyhow and there is nothing you can do for them.
The best you can do is try to inform them, and hope they have somewhere inside of themselves the ability to stand for reason, common sense, and Liberty.
JMHO

90% of the time I have a glock 22 (.40) within arms reach... It has hollow points and half the capacity of the ar mag.... I have no desire to EVER have to use it but if the heroic teacher who hid her kids in cabinets had possessed it the killing would stopped after he entered her classroom and just before he could kill her.

whoops, I guess that was off topic sorta...

While applauding willy's usual brilliant response, I'll throw a question you can ask the men that don't understand the relevance of high capacity magazines.
"Why in the world do you need a Hemi when the same vehicle is available in a regular V8 or V6?"

If for no other reason, because we want one. Quite honestly most everybody in this world including many who are flat broke induldge on things they don't need simply because we want them. AMERICA was founded as a free society to do as we please so long as it was within limits. So if one feels like going out and shooting 30 cans in a row, why shouldn't one be allowed. It would be like saying that you can't have more than 1 child, 1 car per person, or you should only be allowed a daily ration of gruel. We all have our guilty pleasures that we induldge in, some choose cars, some choose boats, others choose stamps, some choose guns, and so on. How is it anybody elses business what somebody else chooses to do with there time, and what they choose to buy. And how will limiting people to a single shot gun help stop crime? Look at areas where guns are outlawed, they just happen to be some of the most dangerous places next to warzones, coincedence.

I truely feel bad for the children, and would hate to think of going through this with my own son now that I'm a father, but on the other hand this crime could have been committed with a baseball bat, knives, machettes, axes, car, or anything else that somebodies twisted mind can misuse. When will we as a society come to realize that it isn't the weapon but the individual that is the problem? If somebody was twisted enough, they could use a stuffed bunny rabbit with a brick in it, but I doubt we wil lever hear for the banning of stuffed toys and houses to prevent a tragedy like that from happening.

And I know this should be in the politics section, but in all honesty I feel a large portion of the blame lies with our society as a whole as we have devalued human life. People have now become desensitized to violence courtesy of TV, abortions are just a thing anymore and many feel it should be allowed to be done to children right up until birth(yes I call them children as it is a life at conception), and not to mention video games and the message that has been sent of how killing is just good entertainment. And before it is said, no I'm not calling for the banning of video games or more restrictions on them. What I AM calling for is people to be responsible for there actions, to accept responsibity for there actions, and for people to realize there are some people in this world who have issues that are beyond the grasp of normal thinking. And that those kinds of people will do harm to others no matter what they have to go through to do it.

I'll stop there before I go off the deep end and bring religion into it.

First of all, I can't imagine the pain and anguish of the families and friends in the senseless killings in Conn. In a very recent study by the FBI: Of the 12600 plus people murdered in the US this year, 323 were killed by rifles. Not assult rifles, but total rifles. I don't know if it is still true, but the weapon of choice for killers used to be a .22. This was most kids first rifle. Most .223 caliber guns are used for target practice or hunting. The weapons used in Conn. were the killer's mothers. She enjoyed target shooting. This kid didn't have too bad of a life. He and mom lived in a 3100 square foot house and mom got $240k a year alimony. That's $20k monthly and it was going up to $295k in 2015. Is the real problem assult rifles or the mentally ill? In my opinion, I don't think banning assult rifles will fix the problem. What's next, semi auto handguns? That's like constantly changing a blown fuse in your car and not fixing the real problem.
Two weeks ago I bought some .22 shells at a local Walmart and the cashier said the computer wanted to know if they were going to be used in a handgun. Who really wanted to know, Walmart or Big Brother? Just my $.02 and an old man's rant.
