Another post about photos...

Hello,

I'm curious about posting photos.

I've seen recommendations about posting using one of the 3rd party photo sharing sights.

My question is why not post the photos here on wellcraftv20.com?

Is it an issue of space on the server and network bandwidth used by this site.

I realize that this site has no advertisements, and donations probably don't cover the full cost of hosting the site, so someone is probably generously footing the bill out-of-pocket.

Just wanted to know, because I'd love to add lots of photos, and I think it could help re-invigorate the this website.

Thanks!

P.S. I think there was post (but I lost it) with someone asking for a person with technical skills to help upgrade the software on the site and configure and/or maintain the server.

I'm your guy. I'm a certified geek at heart, with credentials to back me up, and while I *always* have way-too many projects, I'd be happy to lend my skills to help WellcraftV20.com.

Email me. phil pjb3 com

add an @ and . in the right place (Keeps spam bots down when I post my email this way).

or call me if I don't respond. It starts with 703

then followed by 637 9I52

(again... a couple simple simple tricks to attempt to keep bots from harvesting my phone number!)

Thanks!

Was it Phat or Skunk who did a not too long ago post about a really simple way to put photos in posts? Something like copy and paste - I don’t think that was it, but it was straightforward and easy - can someone get that post back in the current mix?

Was not me, I always use Imgur, kind of a PIA. I take photos on my phone, email to myself, download on computer, then upload to Imgur. Then drag and drop in post on this site.

Just like Photobucket used to be

I am about as un tech as u can get, hope somebody has a simpler way

For me it's simple, I take the picture put it in my picture folder on the PC, then just add it to manage attachments, click browse, add picture to the post, there it is.

Is it OK with the Moderator to post photos to *this* site?

For me it's simple, I take the picture put it in my picture folder on the PC, then just add it to manage attachments, click browse, add picture to the post, there it is.

I like that approach, and it's easy to do.

I have a question for the @moderator or one of the senior members,

Is there a concern about storage space and bandwidth usage?

I ask because posting photos the way that @Giorgio described is easy and has the benefit that WellcraftV20.com actually has the photos themselves, so they won't go away, even a decade later, unlike some of the photo hosting platforms that could change their policy to add watermarks, require fees from the user to embed photos, or just block the photos.

The down side is that photos take up disk space, and if they are hosted by this site itself, they also use up bandwidth and count towards the bandwidth allocation from the hosting service.

Said another way, if enough people add and view enough photos, the monthly hosting bill for WellcraftV20.com could increase.

Since the site has no advertisements, someone is paying the bill themselves (plus donations), and I don't want to take actions that could drive up that bill without the consent of who ever is paying it.

:-)

So please help, if you are a moderator or one of the founders / long timers who have such insights or know who to ask, please help by asking and responding here. Is it OK to upload our photos as attachments to our posts, or would you prefer that we limit that behavior and use some type of outside service to host photos, or maybe a mix. Put some photos here, but don't go too wild!

I'll give my $0.02, for whatever it's worth....
I don't know the economics of hosting a site like this... data storage, bandwidth cost, etc. I'm honestly clueless. I also don't know the economics of ad revenue on a site like this, but I think it could be worthwhile to upgrade the software that runs WellcraftV20.com to a newer version of the software or maybe a different platform (definitely one of the many free platforms... there are multiple good ones)... maybe one that allows likes, and other features that have developed over time.

You should also consider adding some amount of advertising to the site. I'm not talking about annoying, everywhere pop up, flashing, you can't use the site spammy type of stuff.

Maybe a footer, possibly an ad panel on the side bar, and maybe an ad here or there displayed in between message posts....

Please don't flame me if you disagree. I don't know the economics of it all, but my thought and hope is that maybe such a change could bring in some revenue to offset the hosting costs, and thereby cover or reduce storage and bandwidth costs if people were to start making heavy use of photos.

Of course, maybe someone with very deep pockets foots the bill, doesn't want adds, and is fine if we post lots of photos... I'm OK with that too... I'm just trying to gain some direction and be considerate to the creators of this site.

It's an image driven world. Don't believe me.... Hold on a sec...

SEE!!! Didn't my post just get much more interesting?

And... I didn't even go to the cheap trick of showing some boobs that are barely covered!

(P.S. -- I just quickly grabbed that photo off the net.... I didn't pay attention to where it came from or where the photo was taken.)

Anyway, I'm happy to use my tech skills to work on the site and help make whatever changes the powers-that-be decide.

Please take this post for what it is -- and nothing more -- a question about photos in the spirit of consideration, and some ideas that might be helpful. That's all.

I'm not trying to start a flame war or any type of disagreement.

:-)

Cheers!

-Philip
