Adding scuppers.

I did a search a few things popped up, but not exactly what I was looking for.
My boat has a full transom, the drains go right into the bilge area so I get leaves rain water and everything else in there.I've always wanted to add scuppers to the boat.
Any suggestions on doing this I think they would be above the water line, but I have to check it out.Any suggestions on brands, or type, or problems I might run into.Thanks.
 
Scuppers have always been an issue with the V-20's.
The scuppers and right at the waterline when installed. Some guys get water back flowing onto the deck at times or poor drainage. Either set can still get clogged.
 
Hammer was that end instead of and?, and if so I guess you're saying the scup will be sitting at the water level and would not let any water out because of the back pressure.Is that right?.
My boat is at my fishing club so I can't look at it right now.Is the deck height at the water level?.I thought it may be high enough to still get it to drain out, but I may be wrong.
I saw somewhere on here that Wellcraft raised the deck height at some time, would an 86 be before or after this redesign?.

Sorry for the misspelling. Yes, the scuppers are installed just at the waterline. Decks were raised in the 80's model, but not sure what year. CY. has a I/O and is thinking of adding scuppers as well. I have them, but not impressed at all with the design. The decks were raised slightly to get the water to go down and out of the boat. You could simply go with a larger deck drain. Or add additional deck or gunnel drains. Randleman posted a pic. of a deck drain that mounts on the gunnell just at deck level.
 
Add your scoppers straght through the transom at the deck level. This works much better than the way that the V20 floor drains come from the factory and would be a better retro fit for an older boat.
 
I think the '88 models and later is when the decks were raised, but then you give up a little free board. My 86 cuddy has factory scuppers just above the water line. With two people standing in the corner of the boat water does leach in a bit....but it empties out just as easily.
 
Straight out the back is what I'd like to do if possible.I'm just looking to get rid of all the water and junk out of the boat instead of going into the bilge area.
I've seen scups with rubber flappers,plastic,and others.Which would you guys say would work best?.

I always wanted to do mine also, I had 75 I/O and all went to he bildge.

After converting to bracket I said I was going to just go stright out the back, after all as long as its at deck level and above the water line who cares!

Higher then the water line is great cause you never have to worry about the water coming in the boat like some do!!

But I never got to it cause I was busy doing other things all the time and I had to find away to make the water stop going to the bildge, see I had the I/O box and had to put a lip on it to reroute the water away from there, then I had 2 fish boxes in the floor that drained to the bildge and there was no way to water proof them??

So there was to many ways for water to get to bildge so as I was trying to figure it all out, I fixed other stuff, and then after 9 years sold it last summer, so I no have to worry about it now!

I have moved to a 23 Sea Ox self bailing deck, so no more V20 for me to play with, thats up to you guys now!

I was passing by West Marine today and looked at some scuppers, the guy there suggested getting a 1 inch bronze drain tube,sealant, and 2 3/4 inch one way scupper valve(thats all they had).
I asked if they had a 1 peice scupper(valve,tube togeter) and they didn't, but he said this way would be a better way of doing it.
Does this sound right?,he said the bronze is better than plastic.I think the plastic may be better, and easier.
What do you guys think?.
 
Bronze is always better then plastic!!

As for using drain tube I guess that be all right? kind of small to let all the junk out of the boat?
I would go bigger
 
I figured it would be easier to just drill the hole,put some sealant around the thru hull, and just tighten up the fitting from the inside.
With the drain tube there are no threads or anything,it is just held in by the sealant, then the scupper is screwed to the outside of the hull.
Is the drain tube method the most prefered way to go?.
 
Drain tubes are fine!! But most scuppers are larger then that to allow large stuff to come out of them, scales, fish gut, pieces of bait ect ect ect..

But they will work if thats what you want, just might have to clean them out offten to make them work good.

PM Hammer to have him show you the install he did with a bolt and some washers, this will make sure you get a good tight fit and sealed good.
 
THis is what I did. I added in line scuppers. Prevents water from coming in, but is a bit slow with water coming out.

Scupper is a bit higher then the deck making it a bit hard for water to drain. Shoot your drains straight out the back.

I was gonna use these, but two of them, but I think there was a problem with teh deck height. I have a outboard, These might work on an I/O. Still have them if interested.

These deck drains work great. They have a ball valve that lets water drain, but doesnt let water in.

Thanks for the offer on the drains, but I'm going to try to use the ones that are allready there, I'd prefer to leave the deck alone if possible, and they have enough on them to get a hose attached to the drain tubes.

So I think this is what I'll end up using.With 3m 5200

What are your thought on using plastic a plastic one like this?.

This just seems so straight forward, and I like the design.I do understand that the bronze is better will last a lot longer and ther are no worries about the plastic cracking and water leakage.Any other reasons they aren't as good?.
I am going with the bronze just curious.
 
The bronze through hulls are for boats with splashwells I believe. There is a special tool to bend the outter piece, but I guess you can just caulk it.

Abit confused...you have a full transom, bracket ??
Water from the deck drains into your bilge, then pumps it out the gunnel. Are you planning to add the scuppers to pump water out ???

My idea was to connect a tube from the deck drain straight accross to the drain tube and out the back, the way it is now the drains shoot the water on to my batteries then it flows down to the pump area, when the float kicks on and out the side it goes.
I just came back from the boat and it looks like the deck is lower than I thought.I have to go down and measure to make sure it's above the water level.Otherwise I'll live with it the way it is.
