A Day on the Bay

Got the whole family out of the house at a resonable hour yesterday...miracles can happen. A personal best, on the road by 7:30!!! 75 minute trip down to Atlantic Highlands for a day fishing around Sandy Hook. Kept it in the bay for some fluke because of the little one on board.

First thing I noticed was all the V's...I saw at least 4. the second picture though I am not 100% sure its a V maybe a CC Scorpion? Was going to approach a few and see if I could find Willy out there but never got around to it.

One kid slept, the other got a little sea sick

Finally got one with some decent size to it.....still might have been a hair short of 18" min....(forgot to bring a ruler)

Were surrounded by small storms all day....was sure it was a matter of time before one got us so I put up the canvas...of course this guaranteed that we never got a drop.

Mama joins in on the fun!! She actually got the best fish of the day

We stopped for a packed lunch at Spermacetti Cove. You are not allowed to land your boat on Sandy Hook as it is a National park....Spermacetti is not attached to the hook itself so you can land there...it actually was the end of the hook probably about 1000 years ago....there is one of the oldest if not oldest lighthouses in the country on Sandy hook, built in the 1700's at the end of the hook it is now almost 2 miles in from the end....

RWilson,

Great pictures and that's one nice looking V-20 you have. My wife was standing over my shoulder looking and she said,"he is just like you,do all you guys go through that ritual of washing the whole boat down after every time you use it?"

Rob, it sure was nice meetin' you and your family!!...lookin' thru these pics means a lot more having met you guys...

And what a good lookin' V!!...that rear seat works out great and what a nice top!!...yer right about goin' to the trouble to put it up...no rain will fall on your boat after that!!...

The 1st V pic I thought somebody had hoisted a SAIL!!...the second is an older model (70-77) like my old tub you rode in...

Glad to see ya got the crowd out for some fun w/the V...hope we can have both of them same time at Shallotte Inlet (the Point) next year

Nice Wilson, wasn't me there on my stomping grounds, been real busy around the house for a couple of weeks. We got a whole bunch of V's down there.
As a matter of fact I don't believe I have ever been out my whole life and not seen at least one. That second boat is a scorpion i believe. He comes out at the Highlands too, seen it several times.
They are saying if you want any consistent big flatties you got to go down to the Shrewsbury Rocks now, which is about a fifteen minute run down once you round the hook. And there are giant Blues there with Bass on the bottom also. Large groups of bunker all over.
Next time you go bring a Sabiki rig and right there at the Highlands hang around for awhile in by the sailboats and catch yourself a bunch of cocktail blues. You can also toss a tiny little fresh water spoon on a ultra light and catch a bunch too. Put them in a live well and use them for bait for the fluke. Wont catch as many flatties but when you get hit you will be able to feed your whole family on one fish. Kids love catching the little blues too.

Just saw your post, we must of posted at the same time. No wager, just looked at it again and I think you are right, we have two Scorpions, one an I/O and one outboard down there regularly and I get them mixed up with the older V's we got around all the time.
So Bob the senior gent from SC is correct.

Aw darn...already had some of that "Willy Wages" spent on the V...:sun:

I think we all have a little bit of "lumberslinger" in us....its just a matter of to what degree.......thanks for the compliments on the boat!

I dont know willy, dont give up so easy....it looked a little funny around where the windshield meets the gunwhale, something didnt look EXACTLY right....but I will defer to ya'lls expertise.....

And Reel', you can count on me being down there next year...we already have our deposit in on next years house...same week, following 6/19 , further down the island towards the inlet....as long as I dont sink the boat in the next year and gas doesnt go to $6 a gallon I'll have mine there this time!

Assuming Randleman is back from the west coat by then:oh: maybe we can even get him to show up...make it a first class V-20 jamboree!!!

That 3rd week in June worked out great for us...might as well aim for it next year as well...If we can get the 3 boats together at same time, that'd be COOL, COOL!!...

...and as far as that second picture being a Scorpion...sounds like to me you'll just have to keep goin' back til ya spot it again to verify...oh the horrors, but SOMEBODY'S gotta do it

you can clearly see the V emblem just aft of the windshield base

yup there it is plain as day especially after I zoomed in on the original high res pic....(of course it appears I was the only one that had any doubts) I'm learnin' slowly but surely.....I never noticed the slope down to the gunnel was so much further back as opposed to right after the end of the windhshield like on the later models.

Actually the "V" emblem created the only doubt I had cause on that boat, it is much farther aft than on mine...was thinking Chris Craft came up w/their own "V" emblem...afterall it was the same V hull...

Here are the two Scorpion pics I referenced before challengin' Willy to a wager...

Rob, you mentioned the turn-down aft of the windshield...that was the 1st giveaway for me, it's not as far back as an early "V"...

...another was the script of the Chris Craft logo on the side...the boat in your second pic has square lettering there, more like the Wellcraft logo...anyway, it was a fun exercise... :pic:

Ah! I knew you'd come thru for me REEL....my photo inspection department is analyzing the picture first for authenticity. Once we determine there has been no photoshopping, we'll enhance the quality, blow it up by 300% and take a hard look. :sly:

For your consideration...here is my '73.

Some observations:

1) The fuel vent looks to be in the exact location except mine is a touch further away from the rub rail.
2) The rubrail appears to be one-piece aluminum, just as mine was.
3) If that is not a V20 logo, somebody should have sued.
4) Logo on the rear, just behind the whitewater when zoomed I can see a tinge of what looks to be appears to be the the red/white/blue "W" logo just aft of a word strikingly similar to the word "Wellcraft"
5) Everything else about the photo points to sub-1977 V20

If I had to bet on it I would say V20...even though there are slight differences. The world may never know!

I just went to the gallery....MJ's emblem was in the exact location as the pic. Apparently they did move it around between the years. This removes all doubt for me!
