2003 Suzuki 225

Someone at my brothers work place has a 2003 suzuki 225 with the digital guages, but no throttle controls, for sale for $700. Two of the pistons are shot he said. The engine has 90 hours.

He's a mechanic and offered to do the work for a reasonable price (yet to be determined). Can anyone tell me more about this outboard and will it work on a bracketed v20?

Is it worth looking into?

parts are going to be pretty exspensive and hard to find, especially if the two holes need boring. depends on the use, but most suzuki around here have a serious corrosion problem. a collection of bolts waiting to be wrung off.
 
The 225 SUZUKI is a good engine if cared for properly, but they are prone to severe corrosion in the powerhead and ESPESCIALLY the lower unit where the prop sits just inside the exhaust hub. And parts are VERY costly, not to mention you can't just bore one as they are a boron coated sleeve block. They are also a modular engine so they don't require complete teardown as the cylinders on each bank seperate from the main block. The cranks are also modular and pressed together in pieces with no rod bolts. All of the bearings in it are 1 piece caged bearings though, and bearings rarely fail unless they are run without oil. I would be VERY careful of buying a SUZUKI that needs repairs as they can get EXTREMELY costly QUICK! When they're right they are strong engines that are as good as any old school 2 smoker on fuel, and it's pretty light weight for a 225 coming in at 470 pounds dressed out minus oil. More details and a good inspection are needed though to decide if it is worth the money. ALso make sure you have somebody that knows about the unique design of the SUZUKI's to work on them as they are different from pretty much any other 2 stroke outboard out there.
 
Thanks for the replies. I am told that he already has the pistons and that we just need to purchase the "jug head." If nothing else, we could try to fix it and sell it to put money towards a better suited outboard. The only reason I say that is because this guy will do the work for very cheap if we want. The major thing would be the cost of parts.

:news:You just need to come to Florida is all:party:. I work for about half of what everybody else charges, stand behind my work, and do warranty replacements on parts without charging. Yet I still can't get any work from people with enough money to pay me.
