    fish finder

I have an Eagle SeaCharter 480DF.  Functionally, it's the equivalent of a Lowrance LMS-337DF.  The 480DF is monochrome.  Most of the Eagle units do not support NMEA 2000, the 480DF does not. But, for $350 it's a heck of a deal.

    I/Os VS OutBoards

Turbinedoctor, except for the head gasket and freeze plugs, there are no differences between an automotive 350 Chevy and a marine 350. The newest of the new marine motors from GM have hardened exhaust valve seat inserts but are otherwise identical to their automotive crate motor equivalents...

Oh yes, it's cheap, too. All that wood took 2 quarts to do 3 coats on everything. The stuff was on sale for $20 a quart at West Marine.

The $20 drills are nice until you need to chuck a 1/2" bit. I personally use a Milwaukee Magnum drill with a keyed chuck. This drill is built to last many lifetimes. It also has torque to break your wrist. The 1/2 inch drills are geared for torque, 850 rpm, so smaller holes take a little longer...

Use Sikkens Cetol Marine Light on your teak, it looks great. Cetol is a satin finish. There is a Cetol Gloss top coat, but I think it's for interior use only. The Cetol has a stain in it so it will brighten up the gray wood.

    Just found out......

The lights for the GM's are held in with pins, they're super easy to change. $500 is a bit much.

How about you put that Duramax from a Chevy in the boat?

Don't buy cheap grinders, put the $100 down and get one of the Milwaukee long trigger grinders. It's one of the most useful tools in my garage and has especially proven its worth when it comes to rusty trailer hardware. An 8.5 amp 4.5" grinder has power to spare.

    Windshield framework

If you have the frame but it's too pitted and corroded, you can repair the damage with epoxy and then have the frame powder coated.

Prop for V20 cuddy with 225 OMC ob?

The bigger motors have lower gear ratios and spin the shorter pitch prop faster. You still get more speed for a given engine rpm even though the pitch of the props are the same. If the gear ratio of the 225 and 150's are the same and the 150 guys are running a 17, then I would run a 19. If you...

BIG DIESEL - SKOOLS CHECK IT OUT!

I'm a cadet through the casual/California Maritime Academy.  I did sail on an AMO ship for my cadet cruise, the Great Land.  It seems like I'll be better off on a MEBA ship, though.  If I go union, that is. The MEBA $1.8 million dollar buyout is temptng.

BIG DIESEL - SKOOLS CHECK IT OUT!

I'm on the civilian side of shipping.  Most of the guys I have worked with have some kind of story about those ships.  I would like to sail on one just to say I did, but also because they're steam plants and I hate diesel plants.  One guy I talked to said he was on one when one blew a gasket on...

BIG DIESEL - SKOOLS CHECK IT OUT!

TinMan, either that was a Navy ship or one of the old SL-7 containerships? Anybody ever hear of the SS United States? It was a cruise ship with what was effectively an aircraft carrier power plant. It was capable of making 268,000 hp. Think of what that plant burned. Also, it's a steam plant...

BIG DIESEL - SKOOLS CHECK IT OUT!

It says on the website that it burns fuel at a rate of .278 lbs/hp*hr at maximum power. At 108,920 hp * .278 lbs/hp*hr, the fuel consumption is 30280 lbs/hr. The engine is most likely burning IFO-380 fuel oil which has a specific gravity of .96. If water weighs 8.33 lbs/gallon, IFO-380 weighs...

BIG DIESEL - SKOOLS CHECK IT OUT!

Hapag-Lloyd just put an order in for the first of the 14 cylinder RTA96-Flex engines rated at 108,000 hp. I've got the most powerful American diesel engines ever made in my boat, Enterprise R5-V16's rated at 12,500 hp each and a BMEP of 252 psi.
