hi I am concidering selling my 86 v20 steplift. it has an 86 150hp evinrude engine and a single axle trailer. I just don't have time to have it out anymore and was wondering what a good price would be for it and the trailer. the hour meter witch does work shows like 300 hours not sure if its accurate or not. to me it seems the boat has lived on the 1986 trailer its whlole life. the hull seems very sturdy with no soft spots. the boat ran fine last I had it out with no issues. based on this I was hoping someone could help me value this boat.

30 year old hull , 30 year old motor & single axle 30 year old trailer. $2500-$3200
Give or take $500 either way.

I may disagree with others on this one........my opinion being it greatly depends on the condition !

If it's like a time capsule boat, kept dry, tight, clean and shiny therefore in " like new condition" then it should sell for quite a bit more. Reason being......new 20' at AC boat show at $ 64,000 to make an extreme comparison.
Granted, wood construction in V20, and if original fuel tank, plumbing, wiring etc means it's an old boat. If water has permeated transom or other parts of hull, bigger discount there too...
Motor.....same scenario.

So, I suggest you consider pricing your rig based on:
1. Book values - Kelly, etc to get a base line.
2. Add value for any newer equipment - electronics, etc.
3. Check comparable sales, to compare what other's have sold for in worst, roughly equal or better condition.

How to sell - market what's good about your boat, list with several GOOD pictures of your boat in shiny clean condition. Don't stretch the truth, but don't hesitate to list what's good if it is.
As for actual selling price, I'd be guessing without doing this research. Could go for $ 500 if rough.......could sell for $ 8,000 if museum condition.

I will have to get some pictures of it . it has a cover on it now and there is still some snow on it . but I can say its the boat that is in my profile picture if u can see that very well.

Pics of all sections best when selling ...... inside cuddy, deck, transom, hull, helm station, motor, and all sides of hull etc.....good well lit pictures tell a lot of the story.

Ever see boat ads featuring boats loaded with leaves and such ?
Run.....don't walk...unless telling the truth about a boat that's been idle and uncovered.

Sold our "V" spring 2015. We did real well, got our price and the new owner loves the boat.

Price your boat where you feel it should be and hold for your price. People will pay for a boat in great condition. Your "sales pitch" should focus on what it would cost to get into boating when buying a comparable boat new vs your used boat.

Understand though, you will have to "sell" your boat to prospective buyers. Gently lead them to logical conclusions regarding the value of buying your boat rather than other boats. Sell the quality of the "V" the wonderful design and the smooth dry ride. Get them out on the boat so that they can experience the ride. Then they will understand what you are talking about.

Best of luck with your sale!

I got the boat about 4 years ago and it needed a whole out outdrive. The guy who had it before me blew a huge hole in it so I got a good deal on it because of that. Scence then I replaced the outdrive and kind of brought it back to life so to say . so its worth more than what I paid for it

The EYE WASH sell's most boats. How many people go for a sea trial? In my experience any boat that sells for under $3000.00 in the 20foot range is going to have issues! You get what you pay for!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:nut:

also market is a big factor, west coast has probably the highest resale, followed by northeast, then south. i know I/O's are big up north, but down here, can't give them away. most are considered a donor boat for a bracket conversion.

in the end, somethings worth what you can get for it. i'm constantly amazed at what people will pay for things, both over & under what i would pay.

Theres a guy asking 11,500 for an 83 V with a 93 Merc on it here in ohio. It also has a 2010 kicker and a 2013 dual axle trailer but i still think he is asking atleast double of what he will get, i may be wrong though

Those are normally the wife nagging saying to get rid of the boat, you don't use it. Then he can say, I have it for sale honey, nobodys calling on it, don't know why it won't sell, guess I need to take her out again.

As to I/O's, guess I'm in the minority as I actually like them. The nagain I can work on em, so that makes a big difference.

in 1999 I bought my '84 with a '91 merc 150 and a '94 dual axle and a like new full bimini enclosure for $7000.
Motor, trailer and enclosure are long gone....

A 93 merc is worth $0 unless it is already yours and it runs.

Come on guys..........these V's are becoming like collectable cars.....

AC boat show had 20' priced at $ 65,000 +

A solid, sound, dry hulled V in great condition with equally good motor.........man we should be talking $ 15,000 easy ! :)

And my 96' V21, last year of the best selling boat of all time........should sell at Barret Jackson for $ 100,000
