Anyone interested in a Miami to Bimini Flotilla

That is crazy tempting. I need a passport, a Quarantine flag, a week off from work and some good weather.. Do you still need to file a float plan in Miami before going over?
 
Keep in mind that Bimini is 50 miles from Miami. I hold 98 gls of fuel and 18 gls of fresh water. Only one motor, a Merc 2.4 200HP.
 
I have 13 gallons for fresh water. I routinely get 200+ miles range out of my 60 gal tank. That is boating in perfect weather but heavy on the speed. An extra jerry can or two of fuel and water might not be a bad idea on that crossing. Weather would need to be good for me to go. Then there is the stress of not knowing what the weather would be for the return trip. It would be a tragedy to get stuck in paradise a few extra days while the weather clears. I have always wanted to do it but don't know what the family would think about it.. The engines in airplanes and boats seem to develop some unusual sounds at about the halfway mark, or so I have been told..
 
Ya'll need to post pics when ya go. I think member Lesterus took his V to Bimini a few times. Not to mention Cuba.

My Dad knew a guy that took a 13 Whaler on a good day. :oh:
 
There are some that make the trip on jet ski's. I am sure someone has crossed it on a sailboard.
I ran the idea by the CEO, probably not gonna happen.. She thought it a great destination but not by V. I still want to do it one day. Bucket list item.. I would prefer to go with someone experienced, 2 boats adds a safety factor. Maybe fly in to scope it out first, rent a boat to get a lay of the land and find some fishing hot spots. I got the green light on that idea. :sun:

Yes, I have done it many times over the years both in winter with 10' to 12' seas in a 43' Viking Convertible with waves crashing over the flybridge, in a 36' Luhrs and in a 29' Stamas Liberty in summer with flat seas, but never in the V. As to the weather, there's no guaranty but we do know that mid june has many spectacular days for crossing, however hurricane season in the Atlantic ocean is officially from June 1st to November 30th.
Bad weather, we go to Plan B; to go down to Key West, half the trip on the protected waters of the intercoastal waterway, the rest on the Atlantic.:beer:
 
I'm thinking plan B is in store again this year. Gotta get some more bugs during the mini. Parents loved it too, how many more trips they have in them is a mystery. Gotta take advantage of every opportunity.
