Iv got this new to me Yamaha 1997 250 hp ox66 motor, problem is that the identification plate is gone on the bracket . Is there another place to find the model number of this motor, or another way of proving its a 1997, I'd like to be sure when changing the thermostats and fuel filters ! Thanks

I don't know about Yamaha, but I know that OMC and Mercury used a welsh plug with the serial number on it that was on the engine block. Might have one on Yamaha also. Worth a look.

Thanks Paul, I once found the model number for one of my Evinrudes that way,This engine is a whole lot more complicated to get to the freezout plug and I had her shrink wrapped today so it will have to wait till spring I guess.

Pretty sure YAMAHA only gives you the ID tag. If you post pics and start looking at part numbers for things, you might be able to figure out pretty close to what year it is. The other problem many run into is it's a 20 year old outboard. Many engines of that age have had problems by now, and had parts swapped out. Many of these parts are expensive, so quite a few will swap in different parts that work, but may not be 100% correct, so you can get some real basket cases of parts with some of them. So unless you know the history on the engine since new, be prepared to use the year and such as a guide more so than anything else. It SHOULD fit, but it's no guarantee.

Ferm ,thanks for the info, as I have to assume the p/o having owned the boat for 12 years is correct on what year motor he had .I just want conformation on the model as well.when I look up parts I see their are 4 different model numbers. For the 1997 Yamaha v250 fuel injected ox66salt water series , I actually looked up the vst fuel filter for all 4 of those model numbers and each model used the same filter and thermostats! I don't know how that works as Far as electrical parts and that concerns me obviously. And I did take a few pics of the motor which I will post soon as I can
