finally got the boat to the ramp and the boat wouldnt come off so i started the engine to power off well no reverse ok we will push harder so we had it off mate got in and reverse seem to be working worked out if the engine is trimed up it slips could be cable adjustment

ok of wee go flat out the boat wouldnt plane and souned like the prop was slipping just revs well up comes the leg and someones old ski rope was on the prop wtf so we got it of and it dint sound rite it got up on the plane and was sounding like the prop was cavitating

any way the problem stop for some reason and flat out trim up at 4000 rpm 32mph my view its a lazy setup took a while tp plain and after 15min at 4000 rpm the engine got a noise and lost one cylinder wtf now running on 3 cyl and poping threw the intake sounds like a broken valve spring

well looks like ill check it out tomorrow morning and see but i need to bring up the hp of this engine
the prop is 3 blade alloh 14.5 x 17

Forgot to add - if your motor was running well and propped right you'd probably love it. My 3.7 is an incredibly powerful motor. Like I mentioned on another thread, mine will do 37 mph on GPS, and that is even when heavily loaded. It's most impressive when plowing through heavy seas....when I hit large waves the boat doesn't seem to slow down the slightest. That big 4 banger gets the job done for me.

well with the prop part didnt wellcraft test and get the best prop for the v20 what do u have on yours and what horse power is it

Sorry to hear about your disappointing first outing in your V.

I'll tell you my adventure and maybe you'll feel better. I picked up an '83 V20 last year, and after dropping a nearly new 3.7 (<200 hours) in it, we trailered it 80 miles to the coast for the maiden voyage. Got her off the trailer into the water, motor started right up, checked all systems and figured we're good to go. We headed out of the marina, and I brought it up to speed slowly. We're about a mile out and running in the low 30s, and I'm dicking with the new bennet trim tabs I'd installed, when suddenly the boat goes in a rather steep left turn. I'm thinking it was the port tab grabbing too much water, and quickly backed down the throttle before I rolled the boat. Come to find out, the steering cable sheath had come apart at the big nut at the transom assembly. No biggie, we drop the 15hp Yammi kicker and motor back to the marina.

The marina had a cable they thought would work, so my buddy and I start working on it in the parking lot just around dark. The mosquitoes tore our asses up, and when we finally get the cable out we find it's not the right type, and won't work, and the marina is closed. So, we jump in his truck and drive 2 hours back to my house where we removed the (proper) cable from my '74 V20, grab a bite and head back to the seacoast. We got the cable installed and fired her back up and completed the maiden voyage.

I hauled back out later that afternoon to go pick up the wife and kids who were staying at her Mom's nearby. I dutifully strapped the boat down and removed the drain plug at the ramp, got the wife and kids, came back and launched. We're sitting at the dock arranging gear, and after about 10-15 minutes we head out. We made it as far as the entrance to the marina when the motor quit. I cranked it but no go, so I popped the engine cover off, and look down and see my brand new alternator under water! Yup...forgot to put the drain plug back in, and we're sinking. I fired up the Yammi and rode it back into the ramp, spun the *** end around, jumped into chest deep water and put the plug in. Then, I wonder why the bilge pump wasn't pumping......hmm..it helps when the wires are connected to a battery! We'd forgotten to reconnect the house battery after removing it to work on the steering cable. So, I get the bilge pump working and pumped her dry, fired the motor back up, and of course the alternator is toasted.

A trip to NAPA the next morning for an alternator, and we were back in business.

I'm not a nOOb boater, but going 2+ days without sleep, plus the excitement of getting her overboard all added up to a less than alert captain. Lessons learned. Oh, forgot to mention - I LOVE MY V20!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
well i hope mine has to much damage

sounds like you may hae a damaged prop hub. With the engine off, put the shifter in forward gear, rotate the prop counter clockwise as viewed from the rear till it locks in gear, then apply extra pressure by standing ion the prop blade, if the prop rotates easily, the hub is probably spun out and will need replacing

ok i will try that today what about the reverse not engageing when trim up is that cable adjustment

well i found a bent pushrod well its good in one way but is this common on these engines may look into harden ones well i just check it it is hardened well now what any suggestions would be good and dont say burn it

I don't think using hardened push rods will solve your problem. I think it may be more of a lash/geometry issue. there is a way to set the valve lash with various length push rods. You have to get the lifter all the way deflated to check the lash. I allways wanted to use a set of adjustable rocker arms on the head, you can use a set made for a 429/460 Ford or adapt a set from a big block checy. It may take a little work, But I bet it would be worth it, it would solve your valve train issues

ok ill check the preload on the lifters and check the rockers slots r not bottoming out i have been look for rollers yella terra make a bolt on one bug i want to avoid buying 16 of them and the push rods r hardened the engine could not of been valve bounching it was only 4000 rpm and the valve springs and double ones may be a tight guide ill let u o im my progress spareparts thanks

ah maybe when you spun the prop the rpms went a little higher then you thought. just get a push rod install and check the lash like spareparts said get a newer style prop with a sleeve and away you go!:sly:
