#37: Wellcraft V20 Steplift

This hugely popular boat was one of the best-selling designs ever for Wellcraft. It’s important to remember that Wellcraft was a huge player in the fishing-boat business in the 1970s, due in large part to boats like the V20. It came in many different forms, but all of them were capable, utilitarian boats that rode well and carried a relatively wide beam, providing excellent stability. It remained a solid performer until Wellcraft shifted its corporate focus to its racing platforms, deemphasizing the fishing side.

Interesting choice of boats for the article. Personally, I think they should have divided it up into rich people/millionaires boats (30' and over) and regular people boats (30' and under). And I really do question their picking some of the smaller boats that only had a two or three year run. How can you say that a boat that was only around for a few years was one of the best machines? If it was one of the best, it would have, by definition and market pressure, been around for much longer.

Putting the Boston Whaler 13 in made huge sense... these were and are highly sought after boats. But at number 50? Come on!! That's one of the most iconic fishing boats of all times. And saying that the number one boat was a boat that only 11 of them were made ..simply because someone that had a lot of time and money got several fish records while using one? Naa.... that does NOT make it the best fishing boat. Plus, we all know that the Wellcraft V20 should be in the top 5... maybe second to the Whaler... but certainly ahead of Seacraft and Mako and some other lesser built machines. (IMHO)

Most of these boats manufacture,s found their fame in the 60's when fiberglass boats where made. Then the deep V set the industries a step further. To this day they are still being produced. Good to see this American standard perform, well maybe with the help of some imported outboards.:nice:

agree with destroyer of the whaler, probably the biggest gateway boat of all time. thanks to flipper tv show and the ads showing one cut in half, everybody wanted one.

the 13 whaler was made in far more numbers, but the 15 whaler is the better boat. I'd rate the Seacrafts ahead of the V,but I'd put the Mako behind it

When I lived in Toms River my next door neighbor had a Seacraft. Good boat for sure, and we took tons of fish from it, but it was a wet riding boat all of the time. Truthfully I didn't like it much. (But then again, I don't care for center consoles too much anyways, so maybe I'm just being picky). I still think the V20 is a better boat. :head:
