Need some Help !

Motor box on my V20 seems to be missing pieces.
Aluminum piece on rear wall appears to attaches to nothing!
No seals of any kind along sides ?
No Latches to hold down ?
No Insulation or sound deadener in side ?

Don't have another V20 around, to compare, so hoping someone can help me out. And not sure if previous owner removed anything, but NO holes from missing pieces ?

Acquired the Boat , was sitting for a while, and getting into it now.

Thanks Guys....

Go to marinepartdepot.com - the second one down on the left that showed up when I just went on, the LOCKABLE HOLD DOWN CLAMP looks a LOT like the hold down on mine. There is one clamp in the middle at the top. I’m not wild about that latch - you have to hold it up while lowering the cover (kind of awkward). It works, but you may find one that works easier.

Mine doesn’t have any sound insulation any more either (I scraped out the last crumbling bits early on) - I think you can find that stuff (probably better than the original stuff) online, cut it to shape and glue it in.

The aluminum strip you’re talking about, mounted to the transom wall, is a gutter rail to divert water from dropping onto the motor when it splashes onto the cover. I had to add a few screws to mine to secure it to the wall so the water didn’t just run down behind it.

Mine has no seals around the bottom and I don’t think there ever were any. My scuppers dump into the bilge to be cleared by the bilge pump, and any water getting in under the engine cover is evacuated the same way. There are wood strips on each side of the cover, screwed to the deck, which hold the cover in position when someone leans on it. On mine they were too loose a fit and the cover was occasionally pushed out of the hinges - not a good thing, so I added some blocks on the deck, inside the cover to hold it in place better. That cover gets leand against plenty landing fish.

Please let me know if you come up with a good sound insulation resource. My boat is gathering dust right now, due to some other urgent things going on (and the fact that fishing in the Columbia river has been lousy for the past few years).

Good luck with the boat.

pretty sure the marks on top are where a handle was installed for lifting the cover. Probably by a PO. If you want a handle a flush mount handle works well there w a little work. The channel should have a matching piece that is installed in reverse of that piece ( one up one down). It will engage that piece and support the back of the cover. Latches can be installed on the floor close to the transom if needed. engine dog house latches can be stainless or rubber covered and can be found on the net. good luck

Sounds just like my 85. There’s an aluminum lip to “support” the box when closed and 2 blocks of wood on the floor to keep it from sliding but that’s it. No seals, locks...nothing. Seems to work fine just doesn’t keep the water out much but hey, it’s a boat.

Thanks Guys

Marks on rear Top of motor box WAS from a Handle Previous owner must have installed. Had "Stainless Straight Blade screws " Self tapping that were cut off flush. Never saw a handle installed like that, just the flush ones, like a another guy mentioned.

But a handle is needed there to aid in lifting box.
Like the ideas of latches on sides.

Still has the same type handle on the lower front, that I see in a lot of photos.
That one was thru bolted. Looks original, with Phillip's head screws.

BOTH were Crappy Zamak !!
Both are being replaced.!!

Teak blocks on sides and front of motor box, still there , and still good, after 40 years...

Thanks for all the replies!!
All my photos come out sideways, all where uploaded in right position ??

This is the only handle on mine. Located on the top at the rear. Only handle I’ve needed. Mine has a spray type foam in the box for sound.

Thanks 3 Squids

Good idea Flush handle. was that there from Wellcraft, or installed by you ?

Mine has one on the front lower, also which looks like factory, as I have seen alot of earlier V20"s with one there.

So is spray foam, mine is just raw resin covered wood and glass.

Did Wellcraft ever put something on the inside?

I don’t know if my latch and insulation is original or not. I know it’s well built. I’m 280lbs and stand on it all the time to sight cast and have never had a problem.

Mine is an 88 and has the same set up as this picture. I don’t have any latches and that’s never been an issue. Hopefully I remember to take a couple of pictures to share sometime tomorrow. For whatever reason, I don’t ever get notified about posts on this forum (I do subscribe for email alerts).

Don't feel bad, I don't get email notifications either, and checked the box for them.
If I don't check the Forum, would never know i got a reply....

Thanks for your reply.
