V-21

I am interested in the mid 90's Welcraft V-21 with the extended transom "bracket". Does anyone know how this transom is designed? Is it molded/integral to the hull, and what is it constructed of?

Funny that I was looking into the same question. Wondering if they are prone to transom troubles like the V 20s are?
 
There are several members here with 21's. I'm sure that they will tell you how it's made and if there are any downsides to it. From what I understand, the 21's transom was designed that way to make more usable space in the boat.
 
This extended transom is made of fiberglass....it does give you considerable more room inside the boat but is also noted for deadening the outboard noise with the removable splash board in front. I conducted a lil experiment a while back by removing this board and operating at wot and then re inserting it back.....there is a very big difference....

Another plus of the V-21 is the self bailing design......but I really love the 70 gallon midship poly tank.....much better center of gravity than the twin above deck saddle tanks which were only 20 gallons each on my former 74 V-20.......But..........I do miss that hardtop!!

I don't think as much......seems like all the V's from about late 80's to present day (if they still made em)do not have that issue as much as their predecessors....And to tell you the truth I don't know whether or knot that extension is all glass or a combination...I'll have to check on that one....: ) Overall I would say the V-21 is an update on a unbeatable hull design.....they knew enough not to mess with something that has worked for decades (hull). Instead, they made much needed improvements within the hull...I've owned both boats a 1974 V-20 & my current 1996 V-21 (THANK YOU REEL!)and I can tell you the V-21 gives you that classic ride (dry windshield) and a little more on the inside hull. YUP!! :love:Sea trial tomorrow with my only real concern being that the battery box and oil tank compartments are holding a couple inches of water.

I am hoping to sign on it Wednesday after my boat yard looks over the hull and engine for any big issues.
 
That would be rain/washdown water from the rod holders...they are suppose to drain from plastic fittings on each end of the rod box through plastic tubing attached to the bottom of the rod holder & onto the deck. The plastic drain tubes fall off of the rod holders and allow this water to run into these areas. Easy fix really......check for the tubes broken or pulled loose from the rod holder.....that's probably the problem. I replaced all four fittings,hoses & vinyl adapters on my 21...been dry ever since...I also keep those access doors open all the time to keep a lil air circulating, but..... I am fortunate enough to have a dry place to store it too. If/when you buy it you'll have to post some pics....best of luck! Dave
 
The extension is wood cored with fiberglass over it. The biggest killer of any transom in a boat is the owner. When people add accesories many tend to forget to 5200 any screw that goes into a hull, let alone screw holes below the waterline. This is why you see some boats 30 years old with a rock solid transom, yet some 10 year old boats have went to the bottom.
 
I 2nd what Dave said about the engine noise being blocked by the notch panel. It does make a big difference. Add to that a full enclosure and the engine noise is blocked considerably. The rain water probably entered through the rod holders. The rear rod holders drain into those 2 compartments (why I have no idea?) but the front two rod holders are the biggest concern.
They drain down behind the rod boxes into the foam. :oh:

BTW I recently added coaming pads after finding a pair online that fit perfectly. Here is a shot of my nephew and two friends from last month.

Hey! You got a part number on those combing pads? I wanted ones like I had on my 20 but could only find taller ones that extend down below the gunwale....so I bought em :(

That sounds reasonable, but since there's no holes in my rod boxes I'm puzzled. Reelapeelin had to fix that problem on his too, although he drained his back to the bilge. Draining to the deck would be good b/c then no water accumulates anywhere.

Here is a link to the guy I bought the pads from. The pads I bought were made for a Palm Beach boat so they say Palm Beach on the side and have blue piping but I didn't really care. Got the pair new for $53 shipped and it beats not having pads. The factory pads my buddy has on his Clearwater center console are identical to mine, but longer. These were the perfect length and width for a V21. They were not quite 5"...think it was 4 & 7/8?:

My old ones look just like your new ones.....I think mine were mfg by Garlick???

I really don't like the ones I have on now because they extend down too far with nothing behind them.....mfg's offer stuff all the time and then drop the item all too soon.....I guess the search continues....Hey I wonder If I could get your size pads with WELLCRAFT embroidered in....now that would be cool! : )
 
Yeah that would be cool. I thought about trying to somehow white out the Palm Beach logo but I'm a 60% function / 40% beauty type of guy so decided to let it ride.
