Trolling set up's

God
Was looking to set up two rods and reels for trolling for Stripers and Blues, in shore stuff with a possibility of some light off shore if the blue water comes within 20 miles and am wondering what you fellows use, how you set them up etc.
Do not want to spend a lot on this set up if possible. One friend I know does all this with the larger Shimano Charter Special. Says it has held up great for him and the prices are not bad. I don't remember what he had for rods though.

Oh and I should add that I will be using it in salt only and I do not like using wire line at all.
Eventually want to set my boat up with downriggers like I have for the sweet water boat but this year no can do.

I like and use all Shimano TLD 20 & 25's. The TLD 15's are nice too and will hold up to about anything you can throw at em within that range. TLD15 would make a killer striper reel. Nice smoooooth drags. For trolling I like 6' rods. I'm not too picky on the rods. Just needs to match the rod to the line size on the reels and good to go IMO. I have a 6' shakespear uglystick 20/50 matched up to a TLD 20 and it is my fave. Rod runs about $65. TLD 20's can be had for as little as $125 - $130 online. I missed a killer eBay deal by $2 on two new 20's....they went for $217 including shipping...doh! Same as the TLD 25 with a little less line capacity but also a little more drag power than the 25.

The TLD's are a good buy for the $$ I have a TLD for my Cod jigging rod.
For trolling, I'm using a couple setups with the old trusty Penn Senator 4/0 113H's mounted on Penn Senator 6'6" rods 30-50 lb. Mine have roller strippers and roller tip tops, but you really only need them if you're going to be running wire setups. My reels are loaded with 50lb leadcore. I'm mostly trolling tube and worm or some deep divers.

Like everyone else I have my favorite setups. I have Penns that are nice, but I have several Diawa 50H reels that I love. I run downriggers (Invader brand) and these reels just keep working. They are just over 30 years old and look pretty much like new. (Maintenance is a wonderful thing). You can still see/buy them on eBay.
I use different rods depending on how I'm going to be trolling. If I'm using umbrella rigs I go for the heavier 6' rods because of the extra drag of the rig. If I'm using worms, j-plugs, any kind of single lure then I use 8' downrigger rods.
I usually use 25lb mono but I'm liking SpiderWire braid more and more.. Tried Monel and SS and leadcore.. it just doesn't do it for me.. that's why I went downriggers. I cast my own fish shaped 10 lb weights, and I can control the depth easily. It's cool that along with the counters on my downriggers I can also see my weights on my FF so if I mark fish at a particular depth I can precisely put my lures at that depth. :sly:

X2..I like a little stiffer rod w/roller-tips for trolling...you probably won't need wire line, but if you get into any wahoo up there you'll need wire LEADERS...right TOOTHY critters...

Willy, one of the guides down here that i service his boat, is getting ready to replace his TLD's. He's going to have somewhere around 10 combos for sale, TLD 20's, 25's & 30 high speeds. I'l let you know what he has and how much. Normally I wouldn't recomend buying tackle from a guide, but I know this guy and he takes care of his stuff.

BTW, did you get that PM I sent you

Yes i did Spare and thanks for thinking about me, after further discussions here and the new Constable position which is paying off decent that has been put on hold for about four more years.
Sorry I did not respond right away I simply forgot as as I have C.R.S you know.
Can't remember sh!t

And let me know on those set ups.

Spare - I'm definitely interested in those if Willy doesn't get em. I'm actually looking to buy 2 - 3 more setups before leaving on 9/2 for a trip to Murrells Inlet SC. I'd like to have two 30's and another 20 or 25. Let me know - for real.

I use Daiwa SL30SH "slosh 30's" on 7' Sea Striker rods. I really like the 7' rod for getting a fish out and around the outboard. I also keep a Penn 5500SS with a 7' rod in the t-top....you never know when you are going to see something to cast at.

If you wanted or preferred it ti be a level wind then which reel would you guys say?
I have tried to get away from the finger dance while cranking as much as I could, especially with the braids and wet hands. Plus I just dont like it.

I am using Shimano Calcutta for my Fluking and a few others all level winds and love them!
But on my big reels I am still using non level winds as they really not going to take the abuse with out breaking down;
I use Penn 113H like CB for Cod and Sharking they are work horses! I have a Fish Winch Electric attachment for deep water fishing.
With my Diabetes my hands suck! I no longer can use non level winds so I have been making the change over for a while now.

Good Luck

I know everyone has their favorites... if it was me and I wanted to use a level wind reel then the Daiwa 47H would be one of the top contenders on my list. Strong enough for the biggest bluefish or striper. I've taken several football tuna on them without a problem. I still prefer the 50H non-level wind, but the 47H is a reely great reel to consider.
