Going to be rebuilding the transom on a V20 center console outboard model (1989). Open for any suggestions (stock vs. bracket etc.). Currently running a Force 150 HP that may not be reinstalled. Thanks in advance.

What is the problem with the transom now? I'm courious and want to be on the lookout for my own transom.

Well now that I have done the bracket thing, I tell all to do it!
I have always had a full transon so I can't really get into the good and bad. My boat was a I/O and I converted to the bracket and outboard. I feel that in my case that the boat rides and handles better then before.
I belive that there is much more room in the bracket boats. All your stuff is out the back, no cables wires or any of that getting in your way. You will get rid of the splach well allowing you to stand right up against the back of the boat to fish.
Let us no what you decide and how it works out for you!!

And welcome to the site!!

seacrets,
wellcome. i'm redoing my 71 cc, i'm going stock because i'll be using in fresh water only no big water, and also i just got the boat so i can't tell you the pros and cons. i can tell you the guys that went with the bracket love it........i also have a 150 force. how did your boat do with the force? speed and fuel.
ken
may the force be with us............... ;D

I've owned an 85 v20 with an evinrude 185 and loved it. this boat is an 89 center console with no splashwell. the force is down but not out. carburation problems. the transom has water intrusion and delamination. in a following sea, water can get between the aluminum plate over top of the transom if not properly caulked. i am considering the purchase of the 89 but i know i'm probably looking at $1,500-2000 for the transom. i've also found a 180 fisherman with a full transom (ex- seadrive) but i haven't seen any with a bracket . anybody know of any? great boat for a yamaha 130. i think a v6 outboard would add too much weight though. thanks guys for your input.

How handy are you?? You can open the top of the transom and dig out all the rotted wood. After that they make a 2 part composit fill that you can poor in and make a new never rot shrik crack transom.

After which you can add a bracket. I have a I/O conversion. You will see most brackets on a I/O as people get sick of the I/O brakeing down all the time. You will not be sorry that you did!!

I hadf a guy tell me that he wanted $700 to repair the hole left after the I/O was pulled and that was if he didn't run into any problems.
I did it my self for about $100 I think it was a little less. Best thing I ever done!!

Here is a link to a site with the stuff you need. I have no idea what ther cost but this might be you answer. I would have used if I had a lot of rotted wodd but did not.

Ken,  I haven't run the Force yet but I was lucky enough to talk to the original owner.  I ask him all kinds of questions regarding the boat, motor and trailer.  Here are the main highlights of the motor topic.  It never gave him any problems.  He recommended using 87 octane fuel with no special oil.  "Don't run wide open it sucks a lot of gas!"  He also used the boat for walleye and could idle the motor in gear and troll at somewhere between 2 and 2.5 mph.

"May the Force be with us!"

Oh yea he said to use the Japanese plugs - champions did not work right.

Most motors recmand using 87. I  try to use a pretty good oil. But it can be big $$ form some of them. I use Penzoil most of the time.
Running wide open will kill the best of motors if done all the time!!  I have a 175 Yamaha and I run like 4500 rpm and do about 35 mph, for me that is a nice ride with out killing the motor!I top out at 5200 rpm by myself with light load I can get 41 mph. but  for 6 mph faster I am killing the thing!

I can't troll slow  :'( I have to keep putting in and out of gear!  >:( I like to troll any were from 2 to 3 mph but my motor wants to do 4 to5 and I have turned the idle down as low as i care to.

The Force looks real clean and sounds like the owner took good care of it! So i hope you will get some nice seasons out of it!!
