Steering problems

I just purchased a 1988 V20 CC with a 1996 Mariner 135hp V-6 2.0L. Took it out several times runs great, I absolutely love it. Two things that I need to figure out. First, it seems that it’s hard to get out on plane so I was thinking of getting that hydrofoil stabilizer on my lower unit. Will it help? And second, my steering is a little hard and once in a while squeaks (from behind the wheel), I don’t know if I should grease it, change the cables or the rotary unit or both. Is it difficult to replace the whole thing? Thank you in advance.

welcome to the site!

What are you running for a prop?? The foils work nice for out of the hole, but you should be able to get on plane with out one.

As for the steering, pull the cable out of the motor and clean it up, regrease it, and see if that helps. Gets pretty nasty back there if not cleaned regularly. Then you can start looking at other things if not fixed.
On some V20's you will need to unbolt the motor to get the cable out. just slide the motor to one side a bit.

With the steering cable for my I/O cuddy I have had to turn the wheel to expose as much cable as possible, clean up the exposed cable, grease it, then turn in opposite direction to pull exposed cable in and then repeat the process over and over again until the exposed cable comes out with pretty clean grease on it.
