security systems

I'm thinking about buying a camera system for the house. What I want is 4 cameras, day and night. A recording system that will record at least 1 week, preferably more, maybe even copy recorded data to a savable external drive. I would like to be able to watch the cameras on my tv by using the remote to switch from watching tv to checking who's at the front door without getting out of my seat(my wife won't get up and the dog will let anyone in). Being able to look at the cameras from a remote computer/phone/whatever would be nice as well. Seems like the systems are getting cheaper every day(saw some nice ones for around $300). I've read the reviews on numerous systems for sale on Amazon, and even looked at the ones harbor freight has. Let me be clear, I'm not a computer tech guy, I'm a mechanic, I can fix anything that burns gas(except weedeaters), but if it requires expert skills in programming, it will probably end up in the trash can with several bullet holes. Any suggestions or experiences? Be care full, you may get bothered about this.

spare let me know what you come up with as i have been thinking doing the same. would love to have one down at my dock also one at the front door, back door and one in the hallway going to the garage.

what I've been finding is there is a huge gap(price wise) between the profesional systems and the DIY systems, while the performance of each are getting closer and closer. I was looking at this system. http://www.amazon.com/Swann-SWDVK-4...=8-3&keywords=security+camera+system+wireless

read the reviews and explain all that computer crap to me

Spare I've had a single camera unit years now .I'd recomend swann prodcts to anyone.Simple to set up and operate.

Seems pretty straight forward to me.....Cables seem pretty short @ 60' but Im sure they make extensions or longer ones.

Sounds like once you have it installed you just download the app then it will sync itself provided you have internet hooked up to the box

Some of you may remember that my mom died in April of this year. I inherited her house, (along with my brothers and sisters)... but since I live the closest to it, I get to do all the maintenance, lawn mowing, etc. Got to thinking about security since the house is not far from a major college and an empty house is always an invitation to kids and parties... Anyways, because of that I bought this system about 2 months ago.

Been nothing by happy with it. 8 cameras, color, IR for night as well as daytime viewing. SUPER EASY to set up. And most importantly, I can view the house from my computer (or my smartphone with a free downloadable app from them) from my own house. Plus you can set the system to transmit an alarm or email to you if certain cameras detect motion. So the ones inside the house are set to do just that. Much better piece of mind knowing that the house is secure just by looking at it.

Oh, and to set it up, you just go to their site, enter the serial number of your system, and their cloud does all the set up and everything. All you have to do is watch the pics.. No DHCP setup, no internet addresses, etc. SIMPLE!!!

(And most importantly, no bullet holes and a trash can for the system)

Truthfully, the cameras lack a little in sharpness during nighttime viewing, but other than that they work just fine. I can easily watch and tell which neighbors cats and raccoons are in the back yard both day and night. 65 foot range on the cameras, and 65 foot wire from the camera to the DVR. 1 TB hard drive in the system, and you can set it to automatically delete data after x amount of days, or just save the data, or you can transfer it to an external hard drive or DVD.. all by USB ports on the unit. Comes with ererything you need. Only thing I found that I didn't really like was you HAVE to use Internet Explorer to contact their site.. Google Chrome and FireFox don't seem to work right on their system.. other than that it's a no brainer.
