Rod boxes

The previous owner of my V built a replacement rod box on the starboard side because the plastic one pooped out. He did a pretty nice job other than selecting regular screws instead of stainless.

I replaced the screws, well most of them (the batt. on my drill gave out).

He had "Rod Savers" in place of rod racks, I may go back with that or figure something else out. The ones that were here are broken.

Do I see the stringer killer present in your boat Randleman ? It's also known as foam. Just ask Jeffx or me what we think about the s$#%. It will hold moisture and if your strigers are not completely sealed, and they probably are not, the rot monster will come visiting. :'(

randleman, I'll post some pics of what I'm doing wioth my rod boxes, so far it hasn't cost mush and should work out better, i was waiting to finsh wiht them before I posted the pics, but it looks like your in the same delima i was, so maybe it will help, I'll post pics tonight

Cover up that hole with a sheet of starboard and mount tank racks, so I can do some NC wreck diving. ;D

In the old 75 thats were the 20 gal gas tanks are, no rod boxes!!

allright randleman, this is what i did.
I removed the existing rod boxes

fit a couple of spacer blocks

i ran some 3" pvc thru the spacers for cable runs

then i cut some 2X6 for a shelf, installed teh new shelf with construction adhesive, glassed over the top, this really stiffened up the hull sides

next to come is carpet and rod holders, I'll post some pics when its done. I got the idea from an older Formula, that shelf is nice, you can throw junk in there and it doesn't fall out, I'm going to use the original trim for now, but plan to make new trim later

Hey Spareparts,

I have the rod boxes out of my V for teak refinishing, box glass reinforcement, box refinish. I like the wiring tubes and will incorporate (copy) that idea on my boat if you don't mind. In your last picture, you have a track running fore and aft just below the gunnels. I have the same track on my V but don't know what it is used for. Do you know what it is for?

Randleman, I'm no expert but I would be careful in adding support in areas where it wasnt designed. The hull sides may be designed to flex to distribute stress. A hard spot may affect its ability to disperse the force of cutting through the water. Just a thought and there is a very good chance that I have no idea what I'm talking about : I remember hearing about creating hard spots on the hull when replacing stringers, I'm not sure if the same would apply here.

Great minds must think alike cause had the same thought but like you have no idea if legit or not.

I have no idea eaither! But that is to the rear of the boat, so I no think you have to worry about with the bow cutting waves. But who am I??

it shouldn't make much difference as it boxes in the chine, which is allready a hard spot, should actually strengthen the hull longitudanly, the boards that rigging pipe runs through are sitting on top of the factory gussets for the chine, all I've done is increased the height and boxed it in

Nice work SPARE. I wouldn't think the hull would be flexing right there with the angles of the material and all. But I am like the others, just guessing.

My '84 has a rigging tube already under the gunnel.

As for the track, when you see all the boats on this site with the nice tops and enclosures, that is where they attach.

Nice work, but I cant do that to mine. My stringers meet the side of the hull. I have pvc slots at the top for the steering cable and wires.
