Rebuild on 03 225XS

I would guess to say at least what he's asking for it, and then you still have an unknown engine and don't know why it failed in the first place. If you don't fix why it initially failed, you will be rebuilding it again. Chances are it will need the injectors cleaned and flow tested(this runs a pretty hefty amount by itself to do the air inejctors which are critical on these engines), welding the block up if it is salvadgeable, at least a rod and piston, but most likely a rod and a complete rebuild kit. I could easily see $2500 in just parts to go through it, and you still have the unknown of why it failed and is it going to let loose again in 20 hours. I couldn't see paying more than $1500 for it myself. Chances are theres a reason he is willing to trade it for a 2.5L carbed engine as he is probably tired of dealing with it.

I would run away!! Like said it is a blown unknown motor, and he is looking for a 2.4 or 2.5 cause he hastes the motor! I had a 2.4 and that thing was the balls!! Great power and fuel mpg!

I think you are right about it not being the XS, just the cowl is the XS. For a 03 250 XS I gave $6k, a little over twice the asking price and it was a 450 hour running motor that needed nothing. If the lower misc. parts and pieces and the midsection were in great shape $2500 would be about right for all if not a little high. Then again a new Merc lower is downright Pricey if purchased new from a dealer. The fuel mileage on a Optimax is unrivaled.

Thanks Ridge. Eventually my V20 will get an Optimax. With all the good things said about the XS, when it does get an Opti It will be an Optimax XS. But for now the 2.5 will do everything I want it to do. I was hoping to have the V in the garage by now with the cap off for the bracket build. But with work school and the storm things have been going slow. Should have the backend of the V off the trailer this weekend to finish stripping bottom paint if I dont have to work. My goal is to have it up and running when the sheephead start biting at the jetties next year.
