1993 johnson 120 thois is the same motor with the water pump issue my buddy had. he got the lower unit off after using a pry bar, it was on there tuff! got the water pump all changed out and went to replace the lower unit. well after pushing it up he could not get it up enough for the bolts to reach. i told him that some motors need to be in N or R in order to go?? after that he said the shifter was hard to shift by hand with the lower off?? he got the lower unit on with some longer bolts, and says the shift rod is lined up, but it will not shift to any gear?? its stuck in N, i said i would ask the top guys here for him! thanks guys!!

He screwed the shift shaft in when he dropped the lower unit. I will try and find the adjustment length for you tomorrow, but the lower must come off. And the lower should NEVER be forced in. He may have damaged it when he forced it in. If he had to pry it out, then he needs to get a long handled brush and clean up the splines in the end of the crankshaft, and also clean up the splines on the end of the driveshaft, then grease them so they slide in EASILY. Also I hope he didn't mis align it and break the water tube off.

Thanks Ferm! water tube is ok, he said it was also a b**** but thinks thats ok.I will pass on the info and weight for your fix tomorrow!

seems that after taking it apart again he had 2 O rings on the shift shaft that were messed up and what not, some cleaning and new ones and it all sliped back together nicely! he was going to the lake this after noon to see if all is well!
